2."Lights, Camera, Analysis!" - Film Language
In this course we have worked with how to analyse film - specifically cinematic techniques, and plot devices. You have also written and directed your own short films practicing how to use the techniques yourselves.
We have focused on how to write an analytical essay about short films.
Important terms:
Cinematic Techniques:
- Framing (extreme close-up, close-up, medium shot etc.)
- Camera angles (low angle, eye-angle, high-angle)
- Composition (horizontal lines, diagonal lines etc.)
- Camera movement (travelling, pans, tilts etc.)
- Editiing (long takes, short takes, cross-cutting, cut on action, montage etc.)
- Sound (diegetic, non-diegetic, music, contrapuntal, voice over etc.)
- Lighting (hig-key, low-key, natural light etc.)
- Colours (warm colours, cold colours, colour symbolism etc.)
Dramaturgy:
- The Hollywood Model
- Three-act Structure
- Plot devices (suspense and surprise, set-up-pay-off, deadlines, warnings, hints, inner and outer obstacles)
