Titel 2 Course 1 - Robinson Crusoe + The Martian

We read the Oxford Bookworms edition of “Robinson Crusoe” (Daniel Defoe, 1719). The course is meant as an introduction to English text reading.
The text is fairly easy to read, so we focus on other aspects of English, e.g. creative tasks and presentations.
Furthermore, we read the first two chapters of “The Martian” by Andy Weir (2014), which we analyze as a Robinsonade and an example of a diary. We also watch the 2015 film adaptation by Ridley Scott, which we analyze using film terminology.
Academic terms:
Setting
Character
Narrator
Genre: Robinsonade, diary
Film:
The Martian (Ridley Scott, 2015)
Analyzed as a film (film tools) and a Robinsonade.

Titel 4 Course 3 - Australia

Course – Australia
Undervisningsbeskrivelse

In the Australia course, we will look at the “land down under”.
The primary foci of the course are the Aborigines, their “Dreamtime” myths, and the Stolen Generations.
The secondary foci are the Australian dialect of English and a brief presentation of the history of Australia.
In terms of literary analysis, we cover analysis of speech (Kevin Rudd’s “Apology Speech”), literary analysis, e.g. character and setting (Katharine Susannah Prichard, “N’Goola”) and film (“Rabbit-proof Fence”).
Apart from the above, we work with various other types of exercises and grammar.

Primary texts include:
- History of Australia, www.nationsonline.org
- “Rabbit-proof Fence”, film, 2002.
- “Australia’s Stolen Generations”, article
- Katharine Susannah Prichard, “N’goola”, 1959 (short story)
- Kevin Rudd’s “Apology” speech
- The Dreamtime + various Aborigine myths, Stig og Eva Lægdsgaard, “Impressions of Australia”, Systime, 1988

Titel 5 Course 4 - Treasure Island

In the ”Treasure Island”-course, the students read Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Treasure Island” (1882). We read a modernized, easy-to-read version from Saddleback Classics.
We read the novel as a novel (litterært værk), we do not go into the time period, colonialism, etc.
The focus of the course is literary analysis of characters, setting, plot, theme, and other literary tools. The novel affords a great opportunity to analyze these different literary elements, as it is easy-to-read and fairly concrete, e.g. the relationships between characters, the two “sides” (Jim and his friends on the one hand, and Long John Silver and his pirates on the other) being good and evil, respectively.
Also, the included study guide offers a wide range of different types of exercises, e.g. vocabulary, reading and comprehension, creativity, etc.

Titel 6 Course 5 - Animal Farm & The Cold War

”Animal Farm” & The Cold War, Undervisningsbeskrivelse

In this course, the students read George Orwell’s fable story “Animal Farm” and watch the 1954 cartoon, and they are also presented a brief, historical overview of the Cold War Era, 1947-1991 (e.g. the Space Race, McCarthyism, the Korean and Vietnam Wars, and other major events).

During the work with the course material, there will be several points of focus.
One, there will be a focus on the speech genre, most notably Old Major’s speech in “Animal Farm”, and also in the following Cold War material, e.g. Winston Churchill’s “Sinews of Peace”-speech and John F. Kennedy’s “Ich bin ein Berliner”-speech. The speeches will be analysed using both the standard rhetorical pentagon, as well as CLT, Charismatic Leadership Tactics.
Two, students will work with both literary analysis of fiction (of “Animal Farm”) including narrative voice, setting, structure and language, as well as non-fiction analysis, most notably rhetorical analysis of speeches and CLT analysis.
Three, a minor focus will be on the Fable genre. The fable genre is essential for understanding the allegorical level of “Animal Farm”.

Furthermore, students are asked to do project-like work, e.g. presentations of power theme, creative projects (e.g. diary from the perspective of an animal in “Animal Farm” or a news report of the rebellion).

Titel 8 Course 7 - Serial Killers

Serial killers, undervisningsbeskrivelse
I forløbet ”Serial killers” dykker eleverne ned i seriemordernes uhyggelige verden.

Titel 11 Course 8 - Fantasy & Science Fiction

Course: Fantasy and Science Fiction
Undervisningsbeskrivelse

Titel 13 EXAM: Course 10 - Romeo & Juliet

This course combines Shakespeare and the theme of Love. As a natural consequence of that, the main literature is the following excerpts from “Romeo & Juliet”:
• Prologue (Sonnet)
• Act 1, Scene 1 (Street brawl)
• Act 2, Scene 1 (Benvolio and Mercutio look for Romeo in the Capulet orchard)
• Act 2, Scene 2 (Balcony scene)
• Act 5, Scene 3 (Capulet tomb, suicide)

We also watch the 1996 film “Romeo & Juliet” by Baz Luhrmann.
Furthermore, students are asked to act out a scene of their own choosing from “Romeo & Juliet” (creatively), which they must perform for the class. They can choose any scene(s), not just the ones we read in class.
Finally, we analyse (Shakespearean) Sonnets, i.e. the Prologue of “Romeo & Juliet.”

The focus on Romeo & Juliet is to “decode” how Shakespeare writes characters, especially Romeo, Juliet and Mercutio. Romeo’s Petrarchan idea of love is contrasted with Mercutio’s more “earthly”, “lustful” idea of love. Furthermore, Juliet is presented as a strong-willed young woman who has agency of her own.

About the Elizabethan Period and theatre (various sources).

Titel 14 EXAM: Course 11 - The Great Gatsby, Roaring 20s

The Roaring 20s and ”The Great Gatsby”
In this course, the students read F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel “The Great Gatsby”, and they also study the time period of the 1920s in the United States, known as the Roaring 20s.
With regard to the Roaring 20s, students prepare several elective presentations ranging from social topics such as The Jazz Age, The Birth of Mass Culture, Flapper Girls, The Prohibition and Gangsters to literary genres such as The Harlem Renaissance and The Lost Generation.
With regard to “The Great Gatsby”, the analysis centers around Jay Gatsby as a character in the setting of the American 1920s – His ambition, drive, frustration, and dreams are correlated with the “zeitgeist” of the 20s.
Also, the students watch the 2013 Baz Luhrmann film “The Great Gatsby”, which they in general work with in terms of film analysis, and in particular they focus on Baz Luhrmann’s unique visual and auditive style.

Being a 3rd year course, most grammar is exam related, i.e. www.minlaering.dk. The students work with the exam exercises there (Delprøve 1) and grammatical topics relevant for the different grammatical exercises present in the exam exercises.

In the "From slavery to Black Lives Matter" course, we take a look at American history through the lens of racial tensions. We begin in the Colonial era, app. 1640 (John Punch) until 1850-60s, with an overview of the institution of slavery. We also take a look at an excerpt from Frederick Douglass' slave narrative (1854).
We then jump ahead in time until the 1950-60s, briefly addressing the Jim Crow laws, and how they are apparent in Richard Wright's "The Ethics of Living Jim Crow: An Autobiographical Sketch" (1940). Furthermore, we hear Billie Holiday's version of "Strange Fruit" (1939-44). We also read Martin Luther King's "I have a Dream" speech (1963).

Titel 16 EXAM: The British Empire and Its Role in India

- væsentlige historiske, kulturelle og samfundsmæssige forhold i Storbritannien og USA
- historiske og aktuelle forhold i andre engelsksprogede regioner.
