Beskrivelse af de enkelte undervisningsforløb (1 skema for hvert forløb)
Titel 1 01, Songs & Speeches

The purpose of this course is to introduce the students to the various methods of analysis of fiction and non-fiction. Through the analysis of songs and speeches the students work with a number of key terms for fiction (character, setting, theme, symbolism, narrative techniques, etc.) and non-fiction (sender, receiver, circumstances, intention, etc.). The students also work with the most common figures of speech and their function in both types of texts. Through a series of short presentations on the film Pink Floyd: The Wall, the students work in groups and practice close reading of a text. The focus here is on theme, characterisation, symbolism, and narrative techniques (song lyrics, animation, etc.). Some themes that the texts share are: American values and beliefs, the struggle of the individual in (a dystopian) society.

Titel 2 02, Growing Up

In this course, the students continue their work with the analysis of fiction and close reading. Working in groups, they prepare and conduct oral presentations on a pre-assigned short story. Emphasis is placed on characterisation, the narrative voice, the title, the main theme, and symbolism. Moreover, the students train drawing parallels between the different texts: how are they similar and how are they different? The general theme for this course is the challenges young people face while growing up: family relations, peer pressure, class struggle, finding oneself and one's identity.

- Lucy Cross, "The Sin Bin or Lucy's Heart", 2000 (short story)
- David Nicholls, "Every Good Boy", 2011 (short story - used in oral presentations)

Titel 3 03, Digital Identities

"Black Mirror, Black Mirror in my hand who's the happiest in this land?" could be one of the questions we seek to answer with the help of digital technology. But what impact do digital technologies have on interpersonal relationships and on how we perceive ourselves? What answers - or promises - does life in the digital age provide in terms of the most fundamental human questions like happiness, loneliness, death? We will also discuss the wider social implications of digital technology by looking at Facebook's role in the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

Titel 6 04, The African-American Experience

Working with To Kill A Mockingbird as our main text, we discuss past and present life for African Americans in the US. From Negro Spirituals and "Strange Fruit" to Gambino's "This is America", we examine the challenges blacks faced and still face. The documentary I Am Not Your Negro, which is based on the writings of James Baldwin, offers a personal view on key figures of the Civil Rights Movement and connects the past to the present through its varied narrative technique (contemporary and historical footage of race riots, excerpts from Baldwin's diary and novels, interviews, lectures, Hollywood films, songs, etc.). Focus points for this course: How is black identity shaped in connection with the legal and the financial circumstances of African Americans? How does the crime of lynching fit in this context? How are blacks marginalised and ultimately dehumanised? In our analysis of TKAM, we have focused on the contrasts in Atticus as a character; the setting (time, place, the community); the tone; the world of the children vs. the world of the adults; and the role of race and social class (close reading of Chapters 1,2,3,20,23).

Reading List:
- Negro Spirituals: "Follow the Drinking Gourd", "Wade in the Water", "Steal Away to Jesus", "Go Down Moses"
- Abel Meeropol, "Strange Fruit" (1937), poem
- Bob Dylan, "The Death of Emmett Till" (1962), song
- Harper Lee, To Kill A Mockingbird (1960), novel + film from 1962, directed by Robert Mulligan
- Raul Peck, dir. I'm Not Your Negro (2016), documentary
-The Guardian, "Fran works six days a week in fast food, and yet she's homeless: 'It's economic slavery'" (2017), article
- Childish Gambino, "This Is America" (2018), song
