Titel 7 Global English and Career Learning

This topic includes theory about English as a Global Language as well as concrete ways in which we can use English in future jobrelated contexts.

We will start out with a short didactic exercise in which we sum up on grammatical topics and practice teaching these topics to the class. This part will include knowledge about group work and strategies and focus will be on creativity, variation and didactics in general. (3 modules).

Apart from the theoretical information about Global English, you will also meet a Danish woman who spent a year as an exchange student in Japan, learn about the EU-project ESC (det europæiske solidaritetskorps), write an application for one of their projects and go through the concomitant job interview.

In collaboration with Spanish we examine the lives of Hispanics in America – especially the Chicano minority. Focus will be on the analysis of fiction and the various analytical approaches and methods one can use when working on this genre.
About half of the students will write their SROs in Spanish/English and the topic therefore supports the various aspects of working on an extended essay.

Titel 9 Liverpool!

This course is an introduction to our 6-day study trip to Liverpool in March. Our “travel partners” are history and religion.

In preparation for our visit at the Shakespeare North Playhouse in Prescot we will read some biographical information about Shakespeare as well as his sonnet no. 130. We will also learn about the renaissance theater by watching the movie “Shakespeare in Love.”

We will briefly deal with the Victorian era, as we will visit the Museum of Liverpool and follow their Victorian Trail focusing on the industrialization (with history).

In preparation for our day trip to Grasmere and The Lake District, we will study Wordsworth's poem "I wandered lonely..." - as well as his sister's notes – and explore the vicinity from which Wordsworth drew his inspiration. There should be daffodils in March. We will also briefly summarize what characterizes the Romantic Era and its poetry – as well as read up on the biography of Wordsworth.

Our next stop is the Anglican Church which we will visit with religion, and finally we go back to the Museum of Liverpool to for an afternoon on the World War I trail (with history). In preparation for the visit we will read about the Liverpool Blitz, read a couple of WWI poems and look at various recruitment posters from the time.

We will listen to a couple of Beatles songs and hear examples of the local dialect: Scouse.
In addition we will prepare for our visit at the Liverpool Football Club at Anfield Road by reading a short football poem.

Titel 10 Colonialism and Multicultural Britain

This topic is linked to Liverpool as well, as we were supposed to visit the International Slavery Museum during our trip. The visit was cancelled due to a strike. In preparation for the visit, we read Chap. 1 in Colson Whitehead's novel "the Underground Railroad" and looked at the historical facts of slavery.

We studied the effects of The Windrush Scandal as it was described in the short story “Home is Not Here” written by Laura Blake in 2021.

We also dealt with a present-day view of Black identity in Britain as we read Andrea Levy's “This is My England” (article, 2000) as well as Charlotte Williams’ article “Guyana Dreams in Wales” (1998).

Presentations of Blake’s, Levy’s and Williams’ texts were made in small groups/individually and formed the basis for oral and written end of year tests.
To put the texts into perspective, we read Junot Diaz’ article “A Life as A Crime or Javert in Copenhagen” from 2024.
