John Steinbeck's novella is read both as a criticism of the American Dream but also as a dream that inspires and motivates even the most lowly characters.
Other themes that are touched upon are companionship and loneliness.
Analytical terms are setting, character, conflict, theme, symbol, foreshadowing, repetition (as a means of drawing attention to something significant) figurative language: metaphor, simile, personification, style, Modernism
Students will write an essay when they have finished the novel. They will learn the format of an essay, revise paragraphing and how to insert a quotation.

Black America
This course introduces the history and cultural contributions of African Americans. Through literary works, films, and music, we will examine themes of race, identity, social justice, reparations, and double consciousness.
The course readings include classic works as well as contemporary works. Through analysis, interpretation, and discussions students will gain a deeper understanding of the ongoing racial struggles in America. ’Colorblindness’, ’white privilege’, ’systemic/institutionalized racism’, 'internalized racism' and the American Dream, and civil rights are key terms.

Forløbet fokuserer på det amerikanske præsidentvalg i november 2024. Eleverne skal tilegne sig viden om det amerikanske politiske system, herunder political institutions, The President, Congress, The Supreme Court, 'Checks and Balances', the electoral college, the two-party system and swing states.
Eleverne skal undersøge forskellige politikeres holdninger og værdier, og hvordan disse kommer til udtryk i deres politik. Metodisk vil fokus være på den retoriske analyse af politiske taler.

This course which is the introduction to SRO (English A, Music A) focuses like our course 'Black America' on the history and cultural contributions of African Americans. English as a global language: Forløb om engelsk som lingua franca og globalt sprog
Eleverne skal kende til steder, hvor engelsk tales som officielt nationalsprog og opnå basal viden om den historiske udvikling af engelsk som lingua franca.
De skal kende til forskellen på standard English og non-standard English. De skal desuden opnå viden om ELF-kommunikation i fiktion. Dette betyder, at forløbet stiller følgende spørgsmål: hvorfor spiller engelsk så stor en rolle i en globaliseret verden? Hvor tales engelsk egentlig? Hvad er den historiske baggrund? Hvordan lærer man engelsk bedst? Hvilken betydning har sprog for identitet og selvforståelse?

In Love and Trouble (Shakespeare) EXAM
Forløbet 'In Love and Trouble' kredser om den svære kærlighed som tematik. Vi læser teksterne med henblik på at træne tekstanalyse af lyrik (sonnet), uddrag af drama og novelle.
Forløbet har fokus på Shakespeares skrivestil og sprogligt-stilistiske virkemidler og i læsningen af 'Romeo og Julie' er fokus yderligere på begreber som 'star-crossed lovers', 'dramatic irony' og Romeo som 'tragic hero'. Endelig perspektiverer vi til perioden 'The Elizabethan Era' og vi undersøger, hvordan stykket udtrykker denne tid.
I læsningen af 'Brokeback Mountain' undersøger vi, hvordan normer i samfundet forhindrer kærlighed. Vi har bl.a. fokus på 'characterization', 'symbols' og 'setting' - og læser novellen socialhistorisk for at undersøge, hvad teksten kan sige om det landlige USA i perioden 1960-1980. Derudover træner vi perspektivering og læser novellen som en moderne Romeo og Julie-fortælling.

India and Empire EXAM
In this course, students work with analyzing and interpreting texts that are related to British imperialism and colonialism. We explore the implications and effects of British imperialism by analyzing the relationship between the colonizer and the colonized. Relevant post-colonial terms are mimicry, hybridity, 'us-them thinking' as well as racism and prejudice.
Students work with the following questions:
- Do we see a false, prejudiced or otherwise incomplete understanding/representation of the living conditions of the colonized nation?
- In what ways do European culture and Western values dominate?
- In what ways are various identities and world views expressed in the text?
- Does the text express abuse of power and/or inequality?

Representations of Evil
Is evil a personal choice, a social product, or something beyond human control?
How can we define evil? Do we need evil to understand what is good? Is man fundamentally evil or good – or do we all possess both elements? What triggers evil and what prevents it from surfacing? Why are we so fascinated by evil?
Through analysis of various texts, we will explore the above questions and focus on the representation of evil.
We will begin by defining evil - and for that we will read “The Concept of Evil” by Todd Calder. Students must be able to explain his definitions of broad and narrow evil.
