Titel 2 2) National Identities - US + UK

Focus Points (særlige fokuspunkter):
The purpose of this course is to build upon the students' understanding of British and American national identity. We study official and unofficial national anthems and other representative texts, and we focus on how a nation chooses to represent itself (case study: the 2012 London Olympics). We also look at Anderson's concept about nations being imagined communities. Focus questions: What national narratives are created through often reiterated texts, like national anthems, and how do these narratives change through time? Can there be a unanimous understanding of national identity and what factors influence this understanding? What role does social class and ethnicity play in what makes one British or American?

Methodology (progression og arbejdsformer):
The students are introduced to the main methods of fiction analysis that we will be working with: New Criticism and New Historicism. In the analysis of nonfiction, we continue with the rhetorical pentagram and the modes of persuasion. The students create powerpoints about UK anthems and present their work in matrix groups.

Grammar:

Titel 3 3) American Speeches

Focus Points (særlige fokuspunkter):
The purpose of the course is to give the students a deeper understanding of political rhetoric, while at the same time familiarise them with contemporary American society and culture. A close look at the Presidential Inaugural Addresses from 2009 to 2025 reveals the political climate of each era and highlights the differences in political rhetoric. The three speeches we analyse belong to the same genre (inaugural speech), but vary considerably in their particulars because of the sender and the circumstances. We've looked at the intention of the speaker behind each speech, as this emerges from the analysis of the language, the circumstances, and the intended audience. We've also discussed the storming of the Capitol on 6 January 2021 and connected it to the wider context of American society and politics. John Oliver's show provides us with an interesting opportunity to discuss the genre: can his presentation be considerd a speech of sorts? How does it differ from the rest of the texts in this course?

Methodology (progression og arbejdsformer):
We focus on understanding the genre of presidential inaugural addresses and we apply Toulmin's model to analyse Oliver's speech. We continue our work with the rhetorical pentagram. We work mostly in groups and in plenum.

Titel 4 4) Gun culture and school shootings (US) - EKSAMEN

Focus Points (særlige fokuspunkter):
After brief research in groups about selected school shootings, we've analysed a number of texts in order to aquire an understanding of the phenomenon of school shootings and gun culture in general in the USA. We've learned about the Second Amendment and the history behind gun possession, as well as the political circumstances that complicate gun regulations. In our analysis of the fictional texts (the film and the short story), we focused on point of view, cinematic language (Elephant)/narrative technique ("Instinct"), setting, and themes explored. In terms of non-fiction analysis, we've focused on argumentation analysis and on topic discussion (what can be done to prevent gun violence).

Methodology (progression og arbejdsformer):
The students practice online research. They continue their work with non-fiction by focusing on argumentation analysis: the three modes of persuasion; Toulmin's model for argumentation analysis; argumentation fallacies. The new analytical focus in fiction is the terms that analyse cinematic language in film analysis.

The teacher ppt contributes with additional facts about slavery, segregation and the Jim Crow culture, relevant chronologies, the Civil Rights Movement, etc. Then we continue to address the following questions as they are explored in the texts: What did it mean in the past and what does it mean today to be Black in the US? What roles does the use of language play? How can and how does the individual resist institutionalized forms of oppression? How is racial discrimination passed on from generation to generation? Titel 8 7) Englishes - EKSAMEN

Focus Points (særlige fokuspunkter):
This course focuses on different types of English, as we understand the historical, cultural, and political background behind the global dominance of the English language. David Crystal's lectures provide the springboard for the discussion of whether English should become an official lingua franca or not. Focus questions: What factors facilitate the dominance of a particular language? Are some types of English better than others? Should there be an official lingua france on a global scale? We also looked at some basic differences between British English and American English vocabulary.

Methodology (progression og arbejdsformer):
We focused on nonfiction texts and we conducted a formal class debate about English as lingua franca.

Grammar:
Past Paper 15 (170822): pronouns, negative sentences, word classes, gradation of adjectives

Academic focus (faglige mål fra lærerplanen):
- at analysere og perspektivere aktuelle forhold i Storbritannien og USA med anvendelse af grundlæggende engelskfaglig viden om historiske, kulturelle og samfundsmæssige forhold

Titel 9 8) South Africa - VÆRK, EKSAMEN

Focus Points (særlige fokuspunkter):
After learning some basic historic facts about South Africa and the apartheid system, we read Athol Fugard's play "Master Harold"... and the Boys. The focus of our analysis is on characterisation, the relationship between the characters, the use of symbolism, the title of the play, and the themes that are explored. The feature article provides an insight into contemporary issues in South Africa, with special emphasis on internal struggles and on the role the legacy of apartheid can play in international relationships.

Methodology (progression og arbejdsformer):
After some general guidance, the students work on their own in groups in which they analyse pre-assigned excerpts in some depth. Then, they present their work across the groups in matrix formations. This way of working is designed to increase the students' autonomy and to simulate the oral exam, as they are asked individual questions after their presentations.

Grammar:
Past Paper 28 (091226): verb tenses, gradation of adjectives, adverbs, word classes and synonyms
Past Paper 20 (121223): the three grades of adjectives, verb tenses, personal pronouns, syntax, linguistic style

Academic focus (faglige mål fra lærerplanen):
- at analysere og fortolke tekster med anvendelse af faglig terminologi og metode
- at udtrykke sig sammenhængende og forholdsvis flydende, herunder formulere egne synspunkter, i præsentation, samtale og diskussion på engelsk om faglige emner med en relativ høj grad af grammatisk korrekthed
