Titel 3 The Hate U Give #blacklivesmatter

EKSAMENSEMNE

We will read the novel "THE HATE U GIVE" by Angie Thomas and thus we will not only work with text analysis (and the repetition of relevant terms such as setting, characterization, PoV, style of writing and the rhetorical situation), but we will also address the many facets of African American lives in contemporary US.
Our starting point will be the traditional view of the American Dream which we`ll compare to Childish Gambino's video/lyrics American Dream. We will then work with important signposts in African-American History and watch the documentary 13th by Ava DuVernay.
We will also look at:

- gang life and causes for joining: systemic racism
- code-switching: switching to “white” in order to blend in a white environment
- AVVE (related to the above)
- stereotyping (watermelons and fried chicken)
- importance of setting (physical, social, cultural)
- Reasons for differences novel/movie

We will watch the movie THUG and later on in the school year, we will watch SELMA to gain knowledge of the Civil Rights Movement, which in turn ties to the use of Tupac Shakur and the Black Panthers 10 Point program in the novel.

We will also attend a "fællestime"  by Gregory Boyd, som kommer med en Black in the USA performance on Halloween 23. See: https://gregoryboyd.dk/index.php/black-in-the-usa/
