THEME 4: US Election 2024 - The Divided States
Introduction to the theme:
This theme introduces the students to the central American values and the current division the US as a short introduction to the 2024 American Presidential Election.
The course takes its starting point in a central understanding of American values and the American dream. Focus was on the Declaration of Independence and The Constitution as founding documents.
Also, the theme focuses on basics of the American political system and the election of the President. In addition, the students worked with the Democratic and the Republican parties and the two party system in general.
Lastly, the course focused on the "Divided States of America" i.e. polarization, populism, partisanship, gridlock and changing demographics. In this connection, the students discussed different aspects of and reasons for the "Divided States of America"
In relation to method, the course focused on non-fiction analysis in particular with the reading of recent speeches by both Harris and Trump. Focus has been on rhetorical analysis and concepts, i.e. allusion, alliteration, antithesis, rhetorical questions, anaphora, metaphor, tricolon etc.
