Children's literature
This topic deals with British children's literature, with focus on "the golden age" of children's literature ( the period around 1900). While working with children’s literature analytically it is important to have the following things in mind, and therefore the focus will be the following analysis points:
Writen by adults for children – how does the adult author deal with his audience being children?
How can the target group ‘children’ be defined?
Language – what sort of language is used?
Characters – what kind of characters walk the pages of children’s stories?
Illustrations – what part do pictures play in children’s literature?
Problem – how do we as adults analyse and interpret stories that are written for children?
Literature:
Peter Pan, J.M. Barrie (1904) (excerpt)
Alice in Wonderland, Lewis Caroll (1865) (excerpt)

Coming of Age
In the topic "Coming of Age", the focus is on the transition from childhood to adulthood – from innocence to experience. The texts highlight both the differences between these stages and the transition itself as a kind of rite of passage.
Throughout the course, students are introduced to basic concepts related to analysis and interpretation. Particular emphasis is placed on developing a shared academic terminology that they can use in their future work.
The course also encourages students to make connections between texts, working with how to compare and relate them meaningfully in terms of theme, plot and style.
As a bridge from the topic "Crime and Violence" (grundforløbet), we have watched the film We Need to Talk About Kevin, which addresses both themes and thus connects the two units.
Literature:
A whole new World (Aladdin)
Just like That, Michael Richards
Indian Camp, Hemingway
Stranger Things (episode 1, season 1)
We Need to talk about Kevin (film)

We have specially focused on the US and big cities such as New York, but we have also touched upon stories set in London, and also Dickens' take on a new industrial town during the industrial period (Coketown), which serves more as a symbol of the rising of an industrial town than an actual town, just as Gotham City in "Joker" serves as a fictional picture of New York.

Cults and Controversy (EXAM)
The course begins with a lecture that presents the emergence of new religious movements in the post-war period, the 1960s, and the 1970s from historical, social, and cultural perspectives. We examine both the appeal of these movements and the reactions they provoked. As examples of controversial movements, People’s Temple, Scientology, and The Family are introduced. We have also focused on what defines a cult - charismatic leader, isolation from the outside world, brainwashing, mind control etc.
This is followed by a short group project in which students investigate and present other movements.
Texts:
"The Cult Controversy. Spiritual Quest or Mind Control?" (Washington Post, April 26, 1997)
