Titel 1 Literary Influencers

Description

This topic explores the big names and big works of literature around the world. Introducing you to the most influential writers and their works.

Key Questions

Who are some of the most influential writers?
Why are they influential?
Which works of literature turn up in other literature and why might this be?
Who are the most influential writers in your culture?

Aims

To learn about different influential writers and be able to recognise references to them in literature.
To explore the literary history of your own language.
To be able to identify symbolism in literature and comment on its effect.

TOK Questions

What kind of knowledge about a literary text and about literature do we gain when we compare and contrast literary texts?

ATL skills

Research Skills- researching your own author
Self-Management Skills- managing time in lessons in preparation for assessment.
Communication Skills- presenting your chosen influential author.

Titel 2 Antigone by Sopholces

Description:

Antigone written in Ancient Greece in the 5th century BCE by Sophocles, is a piece of drama that tells the story of Antigone, a young girl who buries her brother against the will of her uncle, the king, Creon. In this unit we will look at how to study the literary form of drama: theatre, especially Greek tragedy which is the foundation of much of today’s drama. We will also begin to work towards the Individual Oral. We will learn about Fields of Inquiry and practice our close reading skills.

Key Questions:

In what ways can a 2500 year old work still be relevant today?

How is drama different to reading other literary forms for example novels?

How does Sophocles present the different characters and their development in the play?

Which fields of inquiry can be linked to the play and how?

Aims:

To learn how to close analyse a work and then write that analysis into prose using PESTE(M).

To learn about the differences in studying drama and other literary forms.

To  focus especially on the authorial choices that inform our understanding of characters: characterisation.

Titel 3 SSST Work 1: Poetry

Description:

In this unit you will be working on a collection of poetry written in your own language.

The collection must be made up of 15-20 poems by the same author, but they don’t have to be from the same collection.

The poems must be written originally in your own SSST language.

The poems must be written by an author that is on the PRL:

Select your SSST language at the top. NB: If poetry isn’t listed as one of the literary forms that the writer produces it doesn’t matter you can still study them.

You will use the Student Guide as well as your tutor to help you to analyse these poems.

You should think about how they link to Antigone and the FOIs.

What are the key authorial choices to be aware of when analysing poetry?
How can we link individual poems together to be able to talk about them as one work?

Aims:

To learn how to analyse poetry looking closely at the authorial choices .
To link works together (poetry and Antigone)
To practice writing analysis in your SSST language.

Description:

In this unit we will be reading Walden: A Life in the Woods by Henry David Thoreau. Specifically, the following essays: III 'Reading', V 'Solitude', XI 'Higher-laws', XII 'Brute neighbours', XV 'Winter Animals', XVI 'The Pond in Winter', XVII 'Spring', XVIII 'Conclusion'

Key Questions:
What are the key authorial choices to be aware of when analysing prose-fiction?
How can we link individual essays together to be able to talk about them as one work?
What FOIs are presented in Walden and how is Thoreau presenting them?

Aims:

To learn how to analyse prose non-fiction looking closely at the authorial choices .
To link works together (poetry and Walden)
To practice writing analysis in your SSST language.

Assessment focus: Individual Oral

TOK Questions :

How can a reader assess the quality of a translation? Are some translations better than others? How does the quality of the translation depend on the temporal and spatial context of the translator?

Can it ever be said that a literary text is no longer relevant for a person or a community? On which basis can a statement like that be supported?

ATL skills:

Self-management skills- in this unit we will do an longer essay requiring you to work at home and go in depth with your learning individually..
Thinking skills- through practising close analysis and linking ideas from Walden to your poetry.

Assessment:

1 x 1300-1500 word essay responding to a choice of questions. You will get feedback and then a chance to improve on your work.

The work must be written by an author that is on the PRL and cannot be by an author you have studied already in the SSST course:
