Biology
The course begins with a Crime Scene theme across all subjects, followed by a theme on Energy.
Crime Scene
Theory: Structure of DNA, alleles, restriction enzymes, gel electrophoresis.
Experiments:
Electrophoresis
Examination of hair under a stereo magnifier
Focus on whether the experiments are qualitative or quantitative, as well as on dependent and independent variables, and control variables.
Energy
Theory: Respiration, structure and function of the heart and circulatory system, blood pressure, blood composition, structure and function of the lungs, fitness and the effect of EPO, as well as diet and energy balance.
Experiments:
Heart dissection
Pulse and blood pressure
Hematocrit
Detection of CO₂ in exhaled air
Ventilation exercises
The syllabus includes pages 3–21 in the BNS Book and the exercises on pages 5–12 in the practicals booklet.
The examination material also includes everything in your portfolio.

Focus on doing experiments:
-colour and Vis-absorption spectrum
-ethanol content and colour change of permanganate
-ethanol content and fire (what is the minimum ethanol content in a mixture with water that is need before it can be set alight).
Experiments are used for logical deduction, to talk about qualitative and quantitative experiments and to teach variables (independent, dependent and controlled).
Alkanes and alkenes
Used as a model system to get a chemistry language.
model descriptions: building models of molecules, strucutral formulae (a number of representations), molecular formula.
reactions: combustion, substitution, addition.
Correct terms and ability to switch between macroscopic observation and microscopic model descriptions.
Experiments: complete and incomplete combustion, reaction bestween hydrogen and oxygen, reactions of bromine with alkane/-ene.
