Cross Cultural Communication - Text and video

Cross-cultural communication is communication between people from different cultures. The most obvious difference between cultures is language so it is important to make sure everyone is speaking the same language and has really understood what has been communicated to avoid any information getting lost in translation.

When communicating with people from other cultures, the communication is also influenced by cultural values and attitudes and it can be rather difficult to communicate effectively if there is a big difference between the two cultures. Sometimes something goes wrong and the message may not be received exactly the way the sender intended. The reason is that communication goes through a filter before being received and if there is too much "cultural noise", misunderstanding may occur and the sender risks offending, confusing or sending a misconstrued message which could lead to broken relations or a business deal going sour.

Effective communication involves minimising potential misunderstanding and overcoming any barriers to communication at each stage in the communication process. In business, cross-cultural communication plays a critical role in successfully carrying out business with partners in other areas of the world and when it comes to advertising, it is equally important to be an adept cross-cultural communicator.

Formålet med forløbet er at belyse, hvilken rolle kultur kan spille for virksomheder, der ønsker at ekspandere til udlandet. I får dermed et godt kendskab til  diverse aspekter af begrebet kultur, som er vigtige at have en forståelse for, hvis man ønsker at ekspandere til udlandet, som det er tilfældet med Hallernes Smørrebrød.
Når man arbejder tværkulturelt som Hallernes Smørrebrød, er der en række kulturelle faktorer, som udgør fundamentet for at sikre en effektiv kommunikation,  et godt samarbejde og for at undgå  kulturelt betingede misforståelser. I sidste ende skulle I gerne blive i stand til at udnytte de mange muligheder, der også ligger i kulturelle forskelle. De kulturelle teorier bruges især, når man åbner en restaurant eller en  anden form for virksomhed på et fremmed marked.

I dette forløb arbejder eleverne med non-fiction analyse med fokus på at genkende og analysere forskellige genrer og skrivestile. Eleverne introduceres til narrative, expository og persuasive tekster og anvender analysemodeller som Lasswell/Shannon Weaver-modellen og Toulmins argumentationsmodel. Der arbejdes desuden med nyhedsartiklers opbygning gennem “the inverted pyramid”.
Forløbet tager konsekvent udgangspunkt i aktuelle tekster om Apple og giver eleverne kendskab til genrer som aviser, magasiner, corporate writing, anmeldelser, biografier og autobiografier.

I dette forløb arbejder eleverne med Indien som case for at undersøge kultur, religion, kolonialisme og globalisering. Gennem analyser af både faktatekster, videoer, litteratur og film får eleverne indsigt i Indiens kulturelle og økonomiske mangfoldighed samt betydningen af hinduisme, kastesystemet og britisk kolonialisme. Der arbejdes desuden med postkoloniale perspektiver, stereotyper, kulturforståelse og interkulturelle teorier af bl.a. Edward T. Hall og Geert Hofstede. Animal Farm fra 1945 er en af George Orwells mest kendte romaner. Den blev udgivet lige efter 2. verdenskrig, men emnerne er evigt aktuelle, så når vi læser den, vil vi trække paralleller til nutidige begivenheder og personer. Gennem romanen blev der arbejdet med, hvordan man bruger ord som magtredskab både gennem taler men også via propaganda og manipulation.

We explore the origin of hiphop all the way from its humble beginnings in the cottonfields, through the Harlem Renaissance to the more recent history of dropping beats in Harlem in the 70's and 80's to finally end up in modern day protest songs and Presidential elections.

I dette forløb arbejder eleverne med kunstig intelligens og dens betydning for samfund, kommunikation og menneskelig adfærd. Gennem dokumentar, TED Talks og debatartikler undersøger eleverne både muligheder og udfordringer ved AI, herunder spørgsmål om etik, troværdighed, kreativitet og fremtidens kommunikation. Forløbet har haft fokus på analyse og fortolkning af engelsksprogede tekster samt på kritisk stillingtagen til AI-genereret indhold og digitale kilder. Eleverne har samtidig arbejdet med at styrke deres engelske fagsprog og deres evne til at diskutere aktuelle teknologiske problemstillinger nuanceret både mundtligt og skriftligt.
