Titel 1 Crime

Crime fiction is all about stories that involve a crime, usually something big like a murder, and the search to figure out who did it. These stories often follow a detective, a cop, or sometimes just a regular person who ends up solving the mystery.

The purpose of this first topic was made in cooperation with samfundsfag studying the topic of "crime" also. The students started in a new class after grundforløb and had to work in groups to get to know each other better.

Focus in this course was to get to know different types of crime stories, make a serial killer project and hang up "Wanted (dead or alive) posters" in class.
Another focus was to find out which punishment would fit a certain crime as well as why we, as a society, punish criminals.

Crime fiction explores morality and society by going into into the minds of criminals. In "American Psycho", Patrick Bateman reflects the dark ties between identity, violence, and consumerism. "Blood Trees" shows murder as a response to oppression in a dystopian world. Real-life insights, like Ismael Nazario’s TED Talk on youth incarceration, highlight the impact of personal experience on views of justice. Texts like "The Case for the Defense" and broader discussions on crime deepen our understanding of punishment and rehabilitation.

Titel 3 Dystopian fiction

Dystopian literature is a type of fiction that shows frightening, oppressive societies as a contrast to perfect utopias. These stories often explore themes like control, suffering, and loss of freedom. In "The Handmaid’s Tale", Margaret Atwood shows a world where women are controlled by the state. George Orwell’s "1984" warns of constant surveillance and manipulated truth. Even lighter works like Asimov’s "The Fun They Had" reflect on the impact of technology on human life. Along with animated films like "Autodale" and TED-talks “How to Recognize a Dystopia,” these stories highlight common dystopian themes like dehumanization, conformity, and resistance.

Titel 4 Black America - Hovedværk: "The Hate You Give"

The topic “Black America” explores the struggles, resilience, and evolving identity of African Americans throughout history and into the present day. Through a combination of historical accounts, literary texts, speeches, and visual media, the materials offer a narrative of injustice, resistance, and the fight for equality. From the brutality of slavery as reflected in “Two Slavery Stories” and James Henry Hammond’s “Mudsill Theory”, to the enduring impact of systemic racism highlighted in “The Hate U Give” by Angie Thomas, the legacy of racial inequality is made painfully clear. Works such as “Our America” by LeAlan Jones and visual pieces like the TED Talk “Who We Are” provide further insight into the lived experiences of Black Americans today.

Titel 5 The Welfare State US -Tværfagligt med samf og hist

The welfare state is a complex and often debated topic, especially when comparing the U.S. and Europe. In “Joe Biden Wants to Europeanise the American Welfare State” (The Economist, 2021), U.S. efforts to expand social programs are compared to Europe's stronger systems. Michael Tanner’s “The Welfare State” criticizes welfare from a libertarian view, while “I'm a Welfare Success Story” shows its positive impact. These texts look at areas like childcare, education, and social mobility. Ideas like the residual and institutional models help explain how different countries see the government’s role in helping people. Documentaries like “Why Is It So Hard to Escape Poverty?” add to the discussion about how fair and effective welfare systems really are.

Emnet for forløbet "The Welfare State US" er et tværfagligt samarbejde mellem fagene historie, samfundsfag og engelsk. Formålet er, at eleverne skal skrive en SRO opgave med udgangspunkt i det engelske hovedværk "Joe Biden wants to Europanize the American Welfare state".

Titel 6 Sports and identity

Football is more than just a sport, it shows deeper issues like identity, belonging, and sometimes violence. In Franklin Foer’s “How Football Explains the Sentimental Hooligan”, football fans are seen as deeply emotional and loyal, which can bring people together but also lead to fights. Stories like “I Was a Football Hooligan for 30 Years” and Ian Rankin’s “An Afternoon” help us understand what it feels like to be part of hooligan culture, where loyalty, being tough, and anger often mix. The documentary “Real Football Fight Club” also shows this world, and using Bill Nichols’ ideas about documentaries, we can see how films help us understand real-life issues. All of these works show how football can give people a strong sense of who they are, but it can also lead to problems.

Titel 7 Australia

The topic of "The Stolen Generations" sheds light on one of the most painful and lasting injustices in Australian history. Through personal accounts such as “Mira’s Story” and texts like “The Stolen Generation” by Terry McCarthy, we explore how Aboriginal children were forcibly removed from their families as part of a government policy aimed at assimilation. This traumatic chapter is further contextualized by short stories such as “Flight” by Katharine Susannah Prichard and “Going Home” by Archie Weller, which reflect on the deep sense of loss, identity, and displacement experienced by Indigenous Australians. Alongside these narratives, secondary sources explore the broader historical background of Australia’s colonial past, including its establishment as a British penal colony. Materials such as Kevin Rudd’s "2007 apology", and historical overviews from The Guardian and The New York Times, highlight the ongoing process of national reflection and reconciliation.

Titel 8 English Lingua Franca

English has become the global lingua franca, connecting diverse cultures in business, education, and daily life. As David Crystal explores, the widespread use of English brings both opportunities and challenges, particularly in terms of standardization and cultural adaptation. John Agard’s “Reporting from the Frontline of the Great Dictionary Disaster” highlights these complexities, while Hiroshi Mikitani discusses how Japanese companies are embracing English for international communication. Jay Walker’s TED Talk, “The World’s English Mania”, further explains the global rise of English, and Trine Østergaards work in "The English Handbook" examines its role as a tool for cross-cultural interaction.
In this course, focus is placed on English as Global Language (ELF). We work with a definition, reasons for why English is a global language, and question whether English will continue as the world dominant ELF language. In addition, we look at possible consequences of not having a common go to language in the short movie "Lena".
Materials used are both non-fiction and fiction texts and films.

Titel 9 Shakespeare "MacBeth"

Exploring William Shakespeare’s "Macbeth" gives us insight into themes of ambition, fate, guilt, and the supernatural, elements that continue to resonate with audiences today. Through selected scenes from the play, including the witches’ ominous prophecies in "Act 1" and Macbeth’s descent into madness in "Acts 2 and 5", we witness the tragic unraveling of a once-valiant hero. Supported by the 2015 film adaptation and analyses such as “The Tragic Hero” and “Macbeth: Witchcraft and Witches”, the materials deepen our understanding of the Renaissance worldview, including concepts like the "Great Chain of Being" and the role of the supernatural. Attention to poetic devices and Shakespearean language, especially iambic pentameter, further enriches the study of both Macbeth and "Sonnet 130", allowing for a closer look at how rhythm, figurative language, and structure shape meaning.

Primary materials read:

Extracts from Shakespeare's "Macbeth", from "Reading Shakespeare in Our Time":

Titel 11 The role of women in literature, society and ads

This course explores how women have been represented in literature, media, and society over time. Early texts like "The Yellow Wallpaper" and "Wives and Daughters" show how Victorian ideals portrayed women as weak and dependent. Philosophers like John Stuart Mill challenged these views, calling for gender equality. As time went on, women began finding their voices through literature, music, and activism.

The course also looks at how old gender stereotypes still appear today, especially in media. We examine Disney princesses to explore how female characters have changed, and where they haven't. This includes the concept of baby-face bias, where youthful, childlike features are used to make female characters seem more innocent, passive, or in need of protection.

Finally, we study how ads still objectify women, focusing on Jean Kilbourne’s "Killing Us Softly", which shows how media promotes harmful beauty standards and sexism.

Key themes include the cultural and historical roles of women in the UK and US, using a range of texts, ads, and talks to explore the ongoing fight for equality.
