Spanish ab initio (second year)
The class has been given a thorough introduction to Spanish language and culture, following the requirements of the Language Ab Initio Guide (first assessment 2020). The course includes reading of shorter texts, introduction to relevant vocabulary and grammar, listening exercises, description of pictures, oral and written exercises and assignments as well as assessment of the themes and topics being worked with through self-evaluation and tests. The main material will be E. Alonso et.al: Diverso Básico ('Libro del alumno' and 'Cuaderno de ejercicios') (SGEL 2017) which covers all the topics required in the curriculum as well as theme pages on various Spanish-speaking countries for cultural knowledge, and exercises for reflecting on the topics as well as the task of learning in general.

Different articles from the Mary Glasgow magazines have been used as a supplement to the Diverso course book in order to cover more aspects of some of the sub themes (such as festivals and celebrations, global and social issues).
Grammar:
- Nouns, articles, adjectives - gender and number
- Regular verbs (ar/er/ir) and common irregularities (-go, -oy, diphtongs, vowel change)
- Ser/estar/hay
- Reflexive verbs and 'gustar/encantar/interesar/apetecer/parecer/costar'
- Pronouns: Possessive, interrogative, demonstrative, direct/indirect object
- Locative prepositions
- Quantifiers: Muy/mucho, bastante, poco etc.
- Verbal periphrases: Tener que + inf., ir a + inf., estar/seguir + gerundio, empezar a + inf. acabar de + inf.
- Irregular verbs
- Por/para
- Verb tenses: el presente, el pretérito perfecto, el gerundio, el pretérito indefinido, el pretérito imperfecto, el imperativo
