As an introduction to the unit on New Zealand the students are introduced to a selection of non-fiction and fiction texts about New Zealand culture and maori identity versus white New Zealand.
The film, "The Piano" is used as an example of New Zealand culture from a historical perspective, followed by more contemporary texts on New Zealand identity in modern times.

The unit on American identity and culture is introduced through selected non-fiction texts on American identity, history and culture, followed by a selected number of fiction texts by Ernest Hemingway and Raymond Carver with an emphasis on minimalism as a genre. The film "Short Cuts" by Robert Altman is used as the final part of the Carver reading.
The film, "Forest Gump", is also used to exemplify American culture and history.

Crime Fiction
The students are introduced to crime fiction as a genre in general, as well as the main characteristics of the genre, followed by a selected reading of a short story by Agatha Christie and Arthur Conan Doyle with a particular focus on analysing the characteristics of the crime fiction genre of the texts and a characterisation of the well-known detective types of Hercule Poirot and Sherlock Holmes.
The unit concludes with the reading of a more contemporary crime fiction text by Patricia Highsmith and a discussion on why the genre of crime fiction continues to captivate readers to this day.
