Titel 1 Identities - Beauty and Health

Identity, Beauty Ideals, and Media Influence
In this unit, we explore how identity, body image, and beauty standards are shaped by culture, society, and especially the media. Through a combination of academic texts, documentaries, advertisements, and real-life stories, we investigate how beauty ideals evolve, how they influence self-perception, and how people respond to the pressure to look a certain way.
We begin with selected chapters from Brad Philpot’s English B for the IB Diploma, which introduce key concepts such as representation, stereotypes, and the role of media in constructing identity. These ideas help us understand how beauty standards are communicated and reinforced in everyday life.
We then analyze influential media texts, including Killing Us Softly 4, which exposes how advertising objectifies and idealizes the female body, and Dove’s Real Beauty Sketches, which explores the gap between how women see themselves and how others see them. These examples encourage us to think critically about the power and responsibility of media creators.
To deepen our understanding, we examine real-world stories such as the tragic case of Isabelle Caro, a model whose struggle with anorexia became a global symbol of the dangers of extreme beauty standards. We also discuss texts like “The Whisper of the Mirror”, reflecting on how personal identity and self-worth are influenced by social expectations.
Finally, we look at how beauty ideals change over time through resources such as “The Evolution of Women’s Ideal Body Types”, which demonstrates that what society considers “beautiful” is neither stable nor universal.
Throughout this unit, you will analyze texts, evaluate media messages, and reflect on how beauty standards affect individuals and society. By the end, you will have a deeper understanding of how identity is formed, and how we can challenge harmful norms to promote healthier, more inclusive ideas of beauty.

Titel 2 Identities - Citizens of the world

Stereotypes, Prejudices, and Intercultural Understanding
In this unit, we explore how people perceive one another across cultures, and how these perceptions can both connect and divide us. By examining stereotypes, prejudices, and intercultural encounters, we work to understand why misunderstandings occur, how identity is shaped, and how we can communicate more respectfully in a globalized world.
We begin with foundational concepts from Brad Philpot’s English B for the IB Diploma and Citizens of the World, which introduce ideas such as cultural identity, global citizenship, and the impact of cultural lenses on how we interpret others. These texts help us analyze the difference between generalizations and harmful stereotypes, as well as the roots of prejudice.
The unit also includes Anne Skaarup Rasmussen’s “Intercultural Encounters”, which offers real-world examples of cultural interaction, showing how open-mindedness, curiosity, and communication can bridge cultural differences. To deepen our understanding of cultural frameworks, we examine Geert Hofstede’s Onion Model, which illustrates how values, beliefs, and behaviors are layered within cultures.
A key part of the unit focuses on identity and belonging. The talk “Don’t Ask Where I’m From, Ask Where I’m a Local” challenges traditional ideas of nationality, emphasizing personal experience over birthplace. This perspective helps us reflect on multicultural identities and the fluid nature of “home” in an interconnected world.
Throughout the unit, you will practice analyzing text, listening for detail and meaning, and developing strategies for IB English B listening tasks, including matching statements. Grammar practice and language exercises support your communication skills as you engage with complex cultural topics.
By the end of the unit, you will be better equipped to recognize bias, question assumptions, and approach intercultural interactions with empathy and insight, key skills for becoming a thoughtful, responsible citizen of the world.

Titel 6 Experiences - Migration

Migration and the Refugee Experience
In this unit, we explore the complex and deeply human theme of migration, why people leave their homes, what they experience on their journeys, and how societies respond to newcomers. Using a wide range of texts, films, and creative resources, we investigate the emotional, political, and personal dimensions of migration from both historical and contemporary perspectives.
We begin with extracts from Alan Gratz’s novel Refugee (2017), which follows three young people fleeing conflict and persecution in different times and places. Their stories help us understand how fear, hope, and resilience shape the refugee experience. Alongside this, we analyze Warsan Shire’s powerful poem “Home”, which challenges us to consider what it truly means to be forced to leave one’s country.
To broaden our understanding, we also study W. H. Auden’s “Refugee Blues”, a poem that highlights the struggle for belonging and safety, and examine how migration has been represented in film, including Charlie Chaplin’s classic The Immigrant (1918) and the modern animated short “Migrants.” These visual texts show how migration stories have been told and repeated across time.
Supported by extracts from Brad Philpot’s English B for the IB Diploma and real-world testimonies from the Mixed Migration Centre, we connect literary and artistic portrayals with actual experiences of migrants today.
Throughout the unit, you will engage critically with the material, reflect on global issues, and develop your ability to analyze texts, interpret perspectives, and express your own ideas creatively and thoughtfully.

Titel 10 Social organization: Minorities and Education

Social Organization — Minorities and Education
In this unit, we explore how education shapes societies, and how access to education is often unequal across different social groups. Focusing on minorities, marginalized communities, and issues of educational opportunity, we examine how systems such as meritocracy, socio-economic inequality, and cultural identity influence people’s educational experiences and life chances.
We begin with insights from Brad Philpot’s English B for the IB Diploma and sociological explanations such as “What Is Meritocracy?” to understand the structures that determine who succeed in school and why. These texts help us question the fairness of educational systems and the assumptions behind the idea that effort alone leads to success.
Through case studies, we investigate the challenges faced by minority groups around the world. We look at educational inequality in the Bronx through the work of Stephen Ritz, whose classroom gardening project demonstrates how innovative teaching can transform disadvantaged communities. We also examine the educational struggles of Indigenous peoples in Australia, highlighting how history, culture, and policy continue to affect learning outcomes.
Alongside these real-world examples, we study powerful literary texts that reveal how race, identity, and social status shape individuals’ experiences in school and society. Stories such as “The Lesson” and Langston Hughes’ Passing encourage us to reflect on how discrimination and opportunity intersect, both historically and today. Documentaries like Educating Peter (1992) further illustrate the complexities of inclusion and special education.
By combining academic theory, global case studies, literature, and film, this unit encourages you to think critically about how education both reflects and shapes social organization. You will analyze texts, evaluate different perspectives, and consider what fair and inclusive education might look like in diverse societies.

Titel 11 Human ingenuity: Future humans

Human Ingenuity — Future Humans
In this unit, we explore how human ingenuity, our ability to innovate, imagine, and reshape the world, might transform the future of our species. Through scientific ideas, ethical debates, literary texts, and real-world examples, we examine how technology could change what it means to be human.
We begin by investigating cloning, using texts such as Cloning the First Human and the accompanying materials on human cloning. These sources raise fundamental questions about identity, individuality, and the boundaries of scientific progress. Alongside this, we explore predictions about our evolutionary future through resources like “What Will Humans Look Like in 1 Million Years?”, which challenge us to think about how climate, genetics, and technology might influence our development.
Drawing on Brad Philpot’s English B for the IB Diploma, we expand our understanding of human ingenuity by analyzing how new inventions and scientific discoveries push society forward while also creating new dilemmas. The short story “Supertoys Last All Summer Long” allows us to reflect on artificial intelligence, emotional connection, and the blurred lines between humans and machines.
We then examine the rise of digital identity and technological enhancement through topics such as AI-generated digital clones, the technological singularity, and the possibility of becoming cyborgs. These examples show how technology is already reshaping communication, creativity, and even the human body.
The unit also covers the scientific and ethical debates around genetically modified foods (GMOs), encouraging us to consider how altering living organisms may help solve global problems, or create new ones. Through quizzes, articles, and case studies, we analyze the advantages and controversies surrounding genetic modification.
Throughout this unit, you will explore how innovation influences the future of humanity. By engaging with science, literature, ethics, and technology, you will develop your ability to analyze complex ideas, evaluate multiple perspectives, and imagine how human ingenuity might shape the world to come.
