Spanish ab initio - 1st year
The class will be given a thorough introduction to Spanish language and culture, following the requirements of the Language Ab Initio Guide (first assessment 2020). The course will include reading and translation of shorter texts, introduction to relevant vocabulary and grammar, listening exercises, description of pictures, oral and written exercises and assignment and regular assessment of the themes and topics being worked with through self-evaluation and shorter tests. The main material will be E. Alonso et.al: Diverso Básico ('Libro del alumno' and 'Cuaderno de ejercicios') (SGEL 2017) which covers most of the topics required in the curriculum.
The following themes and topics will be covered (chapters and sections):
Identities:
Personal attributes: 1 ("La clase", "Datos personales", "Presentaciones"), 2 ("Aspecto físico", "Carácter")
Personal relationships: 2 ("Mi familia y mis amigos")
Eating and drinking: 6 ("Comidas y bebidas", "Hábitos alimenticios", "Comer fuera")
Experiences:
Daily routine: 4 ("Actividades y horas", "Rutina diaria", "Horarios")
Leisure: 5 ("Deportes", "Gustos"), 7 ("Hacer planes", "Dar opiniones")
Holidays: 9 ("Saber viajar", "Descubrir", Experiencias")
Human ingenuity:
Entertainment: 5 ("Concursos"), 7 ("Invitar")
Social organization:
Neighbourhood: 3 ("Un barrio", "Una casa")
Sharing the planet:
Climate: 8 ("El tiempo", "El clima en nuestras vidas", "El clima perfecto")
Physical geography: 3 ("Una ciudad")
Geographical and cultural aspects of the following countries (with theme pages in the book) will be covered in class or as group work with presentations: Chile, Ecuador, Guatemala, Peru and Costa Rica, Spain, Cuba, Dominican Republic and Argentina
Grammar:
- Nouns, articles, adjectives - gender and number
- Regular verbs in present and perfect tense and common irregularities, including diphthongs and vowel change
- Ser/estar/hay
- Reflexive verbs and 'gustar/encantar/interesar'
- Pronouns: Possessive, interrogative, demonstrative
- Locative prepositions
- Quantifiers: Muy/mucho, bastante, poco etc.
- Object pronouns
- Modal verbs (poder, querer) and verbal periphrases (tener que + inf., ir a + inf.)
