Initial course - Pasos 1
The class will be given a broad introduction to Spanish language and cultural aspects of Spanish-speaking countries in order to obtain skills of language comprehension (reading and listening) and production (speaking and writing) that will prepare them for Spanish ab initio in the IB Diploma programme. Based on the beginner material Pasos 1, a number of themes and topics will be processed, as well as the grammar required for basic language production.

R. M. Martín, M. Ellis: Pasos 1 - Spanish Beginner's course, 4th Edition, coursebook, chapter 1-9 (John Murray Learning 2015)
Supplementary exercises from the Pasos activity book
Supplementary video clips (from the Pasos DVD) for selected chapters
The following topics will be covered:
- Personal attributes and family (ch. 1)
- Food and drink (ch. 2, 6)
- Personal relations (ch. 2)
- Locations, places, homes (ch. 3-4, 8)
- Daily routine and leisure (ch. 5, 8)
- Shopping and clothes (ch. 6)
- Entertainment (ch. 8-9)
- Repetition and extension of the topics (ch. 7)
- Christmas traditions in Spain (extra material)
Grammar:
- Nouns, articles and adjectives - gender and number
- Regular verbs in present tense
- Ser/estar/hay
- Irregular verbs: -go, -oy, diphtongs, vowel change
- Locative prepositions
- Reflexive verbs and 'gustar/encantar/interesar'
- Modal verbs (Poder, querer) and verbal periphrases (Tener que + inf., ir a + inf.)
The primary course material will be supplemented with texts and media from other sources.
