Titel 3 Anthems of Change

1bEN/En - PROJECT:
Songs that became anthems of change

Lesson 1 Intro to the topic.
Behind the Civil Rights Message Of "Blackbird" by The Beatles (americansongwriter.com)
An analysis of Lennon/McCartney: Blackbird, 1968.

Lesson 2 The groups choose a song and start working with the product.

THE PRODUCT AND CLASS PRESENTATION
1) You must prepare a presentation of a song (of your choice) and artist, and the historical event that it marks (the circumstances for which it was written). Consider also here if the song had an impact on things at the time it was released.
2) An analysis of the song lyrics and the music (see methods for analysing poetry and music in the back of this compendium).
3) Your product must be presented as a power point presentation which includes central points and images that match your presentation – and of course also the actual song.
All members of the group must participate in the oral presentation (approx.. 15 mins.)

GROUPS and choice of song:
Oliver, Isha, Rebecca og Victor: “Imagine” by John Lennon
Peter, Sofie og Emily: “Do They Know it’s Christmas” by Band Aid

Titel 4 South Africa and Noah's, Born a Crime

During this topic, we learn about the Apartheid system in South Africa. We zoom in on the two anti-apartheid activists, Steven Biko and Nelson Mandela and their ardent struggle for equality and civil rights. We learn about idea behind The Black Consciousness Movement and watch the film, Cry Freedom, based on the true story about the friendship between Steve Biko and Donald Woods. We also read three short stories: one about a young black boy for whom apartheid is mainly something that shuts him out of the park that white kids play in. Another about the illegal relationship between a white man and a black woman, and finally, one about the guilt wiyhin white people after the end of apartheid.

With Trevor Noah's memoir: "Born a Crime" we moreover learn more about what it was like growing up as a mixed race child in South Africa around the time when Apartheid was dimantled, and about the consequences the now no longer existing Apartheid system still has on South Africans today and why it is important, now maybe more than ever, to teach young people about the dangers of racism and unjust regimes.

Non-fiction:
Apartheid in South Africa, from Encyclopædia Britannica online
Interview with Steve Biko: What is Black Consciousness? from Broadbridge, Finding Our Strength - South Africa  Today, Gyldendal, 1990.

Titel 6 The Promised Land

Description:
We take our starting point looking at the Declaration of Independence and the pioneer and "can-do" spirit of the frotiersmen. We read the Italian sonnet by Lazarus with focus on poetic devices and its message. With outset in Adichie's talk about the Dangers of a Single Story, we discuss the importance of seeing thing from different perspectives. Adichie also lets us in on her views on the English language and through her short story, The Ting Around Your Neck, we learn about the compications of immigration and fitting in.
We work with a rhetorical analysis of Obama's speech and consider what his main message is, about what it means to be an American and what the most important American values are. This (and Lazarus' poem) we finally compare with the policies of the current American President, Trump.

The film, The Pursuit of HappYness, reflects that story of the American "can-do" spirit, and the right to pursue one's happiness.

List of contents:

The Declaration of Independence, 1776
Edward N. Kearny, The Frontier Heritage (1984)

Titel 7 London - Mind the Gap

The aim of this topic is to learn more about the city of London: We take the starting point in William Blake's and Charles Dickens' depictions of London, with their focus on the social injustices and inequality shown in Blake's poem and Dickens', "Oliver Twist". We read an essay about London written by Charles Dickens, with focus on his very elaborate use of descriptive words to capture a certain atmosphere.. We talk about the class system, about homelessness and look at poverty in London today. The overall focus is on the gap between the rich and the poor.

Poem: London by William Blake, 1794
Excerpt from Oliver Twist, ch. 8, by Charles Dickens, 1838
