Post colonialism explores the cultural legacy of colonialism and the human consequences of the external control and economic exploitation of native peoples and their land.
It looks into the Imperial regimes’ influence on the original peoples’ culture through social and political power.
Postcolonial discourse as an opposition to colonial discourse: the colonizers are superior in every way to the colonized peoples and the colonizers are really doing them a favour by bringing them civilisation and Christianity, etc. (ex: Kipling: White man’s burden)
Exploring postcolonial identity and language (pidgin an example of a hybrid language developed in the heyday of European expansion as a way for people without a common language to communicate. Always viewed as inferior, over-simplified, childish etc. (just like the indigenous peoples).

Postcolonial terninology
More than three quarters of the people living in the world today have had their lives shaped by the experience of colonialism.
Postcolonial identity and discourse seen through literature and poetry:
Excerpts:
Chimananda Adichie: Americanah (new postcolonial literature: Nigerian woman in USA)
NoViolet Bulawayo: We Need New Names (Zimbabwe – US), 3 chapters
Aravind Adiga: The White Tiger, excerpt (written assignment)
