Inequality in the U.S. (Globale Tendenser) (EXAM)
The course focuses on inequalities in contemporary U.S.: Income inequality has reached unprecedented levels in the past decade, poverty is significantly worse than in similarly wealthy countries, and racial inequalities are an issue of deep concern. Why is there so much inequality and poverty in the U.S.? What are the solutions to reduce them?
The social science students will focus primarily on economic inequality. After a brief review of the evolution of the American welfare state – from the social reforms of the immediate post-WWII decades to Reagan’s neoliberal revolution – we turn our attention to different kinds of inequality (economic, political, and group/horizontal) and some of the questions that have featured highly in political debates in recent years (the economics of opportunity, educational inequality, in-work poverty, housing inequality etc.).
The music students will focus on postwar African American music and consider how music can be seen NOT as a compensation for racial inequalities but as a recording of inequalities. Covering musical styles such as the blues, rhythm and blues, soul, and hip-hop, we will look into the ways in which black popular culture has articulated social and political narratives that affect black identity and how black music, more generally, has reflected the African American historical experience from the Black Power Revolution of the 1970s to the recent BLM protests.
