Titel 5 The American South (EXAM)

The U.S. Deep South seems like a paradox; on the one hand, it exists as the site of the nation’s most painful racial memories and has a reputation for cruelty, violence, and bigotry. On the other, the South has long been recognized for its cultural legacy and is celebrated for its hospitality and commitment to heritage, family, and community.

We shall in this course look at the culture and history of the American South as represented (or misrepresented) in fiction, non-fiction, and visual culture. Our focus will be on two interrelated questions: (1) How has southern culture been shaped by a distinctive, historically changing political economy (chattel slavery, the economy of segregation, the rise of New South industrialism and neoliberalism)? (2) What is distinct and unique about southern cultural expression (e.g., the slave narrative, the blues, Southern Gothic, or the southern rock movement)? Our guiding premise is that the Deep South is stranger than fiction.

Titel 6 Inequality in the U.S. (Globale Tendenser) (EXAM)

The course focuses on inequalities in contemporary U.S.: Income inequality has reached unprecedented levels in the past decade, poverty is significantly worse than in similarly wealthy countries, and racial inequalities are an issue of deep concern. Why is there so much inequality and poverty in the U.S.? What are the solutions to reduce them?

The social science students will focus primarily on economic inequality. After a brief review of the evolution of the American welfare state – from the social reforms of the immediate post-WWII decades to Reagan’s neoliberal revolution – we turn our attention to different kinds of inequality (economic, political, and group/horizontal) and some of the questions that have featured highly in political debates in recent years (the economics of opportunity, educational inequality, in-work poverty, housing inequality etc.).

The music students will focus on postwar African American music and consider how music can be seen NOT as a compensation for racial inequalities but as a recording of inequalities. Covering musical styles such as the blues, rhythm and blues, soul, and hip-hop, we will look into the ways in which black popular culture has articulated social and political narratives that affect black identity and how black music, more generally, has reflected the African American historical experience from the Black Power Revolution of the 1970s to the recent BLM protests.

Titel 8 Gender Trouble (EXAM)

The course explores a range of gender-related questions through the lens of fiction, non-fiction, film and television, advertising, and the internet. We’ll focus on how popular culture often functions to reinforce social norms relating to gender roles and identities, while also acting as sites of resistance through challenging gender norms. Readings and discussions will be situated in two informing contexts: First, that of the history of feminism and other gender equality movements from the 1960s to today, and second, that of gender theory (e.g. the theory of the male gaze, queer studies, and intersectionality).

Titel 9 New York & Ethnic Formation (GCP)

This course will engage New York City as a dynamic and complex urban formation, partly organized around ethnic spaces and neighborhoods. On the one hand, we will focus on how different ethnic groups have constructed and maintained distinct neighborhoods and thus transformed local places into global sites. On the other hand, we will consider how filmmakers have addressed and represented New York’s ethnic urban spaces within the context of the city’s contemporary history. The main part of the course is structured as project-based: Students prepare presentations on various ethnic enclaves in NYC: Harlem, Spanish Harlem, Chinatown, Little Italy, Hassidic Brooklyn, etc.

Titel 10 The Great Gatsby at 100

We will study a great novel on the 100th anniversary of its publication: F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. Some of our guiding questions will be: Why is Gatsby “great”? What is his story of? Why should we trust Nick Carraway to tell the story, or should we? What does this novel say about America, its opportunity, its possibility, its romance, and its love life?

Titel 11 Early English Literature (EXAM)

The course is designed to give us a sense of the shape of English literature from the Middle Ages through 1688. Shakespeare’s Hamlet will take center stage, but we will also pay due attention to Chaucer, Donne, and Milton. The first half of the course provides an introduction to the history of the English language from its Anglo-Saxon roots through to its current status as the global lingua franca.

Our examination of Hamlet will revolve around some of the following questions: What is a (Shakespearean) tragedy? What is a tragic hero? Where does the Ghost come from and why does it matter so much whether or not he comes from Purgatory? What did Gertrude know and when did she know it? Do we need Freud to understand why Hamlet is so troubled?

Titel 12 (Post)Colonial Jamaica (EXAM)

The course centers on Jamaica as a regional example of the postcolonial, global South. We will focus on (1) the British impact on Jamaica from the heyday of the British Empire to the island’s post-colonial predicament; (2) the relationship between economic globalization and the cultural history of modern Jamaica; and (3) the influence of the Jamaican diaspora in the U.S. and the U.K. Along the way, we will also examine Jamaican English as an example of a World English variety and compare this to native-speaker varieties of English as found in the US and the UK.

Titel 13 British Cinema and Society since 1945

Postwar British cinema is dominated by three main traditions: (1) a tradition of nostalgic heritage cinema (often in the guise of a literary classic); (2) a continuous output of social realism; and (3) political thrillers, spy movies, and other character-driven mainstream formulas. In this course, we will explore what it is about modern British culture that seems to call for these cinematic strands.

We will pursue our cinematic interests against the backdrop of political, social, and cultural issues in modern British history (the rise of the welfare state, decolonization, neoliberal reforms since the 1980s, multiculturalism, the trajectory from ‘Big Society’ through Brexit and beyond).
