Herudover arbejder vi med mundtlig sprogfærdighed, basal grammatik (ordklasser, kongruens) og ordforrådsarbejde.

English as Global Language and Lingua Franca
A brief course on English as a lingua franca (ELF). We will consider some of the factors that have led to the dominant status of English as today’s most prevalent language, the interrelation between globalization, standardization, and linguistic variation, as well as the use of English beyond the native norm.

The American South (EXAM)
The U.S. Deep South seems like a paradox; on the one hand, it exists as the site of the nation’s most painful racial memories and has a reputation for cruelty, violence, and bigotry. On the other, the South has long been recognized for its cultural legacy and is celebrated for its hospitality and commitment to heritage, family, and community.
We shall in this course look at the culture and history of the American South as represented (or misrepresented) in fiction, non-fiction, and visual culture. Our focus will be on two interrelated questions: (1) How has southern culture been shaped by a distinctive, historically changing political economy (chattel slavery, the economy of segregation, the rise of New South industrialism and neoliberalism)? (2) What is distinct and unique about southern cultural expression (e.g., the slave narrative, the blues, Southern Gothic, or the southern rock movement)? Our guiding premise is that the Deep South is stranger than fiction.

Inequality in the UK (EXAM)
This course explores inequality as one of the major challenges facing the U.K. today, focusing particularly on educational inequality. The course starts with a brief introduction to the evolution of the British welfare state: from the social reforms of the Attlee government and the post-war compromise to Thatcher’s neoliberal revolution. Then we engage with specific themes such as the contemporary English class system, the relationship between social class and education, reasons for persistent educational inequalities, and the economics of opportunity.

Gender Trouble (EXAM)
The course explores a range of gender-related questions through the lens of fiction, non-fiction, digital media (including film and television), advertising, and the internet. We’ll focus on how popular culture often functions to reinforce social norms relating to gender roles and identities, while also acting as sites of resistance through challenging gender norms. Readings and discussions will be situated in two informing contexts: First, that of the history of feminism and other gender equality movements from the 1960s to today, and second, that of gender theory (e.g. the theory of the male gaze, queer studies, and intersectionality).
