Titel 1 Growing Up

Titel 5 American Values - EKSAMEN

In this course we shall explore the historical and contemporary concept of American Values. Hopefully you will be able to connect it to what you have studied in history class (your topic "USA - utopi og virkelighed")

It would be logical to start with historical texts, but there's a presidential election going on, so we will start there: We shall study the American political system, and look at issues and values that are important in the 2024 Presidential Election.

After that, we will connect this to the more historical foundation:
The Founding Fathers
The Frontier Heritage/ The Frontier Thesis;
The USA as the land of immigrants
The Civil Rights Movement

Traditional American core values --- “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”, determination/ hard work/ achievement, self-reliance, individuality, self-made wealth/ “from rags to riches”, opportunity, upward mobility, equality and civil rights, diversity, democracy.

(ANALYSIS FOCUS: fact and fiction codes in documentary and video campaign ads;
analysis of language, style and rhetorical devices in various text genres)

Titel 6 Sport and sexuality - EKSAMEN

Why has it been hard for LGBTQ+ members to be themselves in sports (and in society in general), and what kind of development has there been in this area? Which issues are still relevant and important?

Titel 7 English around the world - EKSAMEN

In this course we shall explore English as a global language: it is both a common language for people across the world, and it is a language with many varieties within countries where people speak English as their first language (or with countries where English is a second or a third language). There will be two different main topics within the theme unit:

--- English as a lingua franca – a common language used for communication by people who could otherwise not communicate. Sometimes communication is successful, other times it involves challenges.

--- English as an official or first language, but with different accents and dialects. We shall have a look at some examples of “non-standard English”, and we will discuss why authors choose to use this language in fiction.

KEYWORDS: (intercultural) communication; globalization; English as an official language; English as lingua franca (ELF) and English as a foreign language (EFL); pidgin and creole; standard vs. non-standard English; dialect and accent/ regional language; code-switching; language as a source and means of cultural identity; language and social status
