"The Officers' Mess" (1901-1910) as described by British army officer John Morris
FOCUS: We have looked at how Kipling presents his idea of the British Empire differently in his poem and his short story, including how the Empire has a great responsibility to civilize the natives as shown in "White Man's Burden", but also how he shows the negative side of the Empire in "Lispeth." In Orwell's autobiographical essay, we have seen how critical Orwell is of the British Empire and its power and how he feels about being an officer of the Empire.
