Titel 1 Capital Punishment in the US

The class investigates the subject of capital punishment in the US through fiction and non-fiction texts. The subject also involves arguments for and against, and an ethical perspective on the issue. In addition to this, we look at the topic of growing old in prison and death row through pictures and text. Lastly we watch Tim Robbins, Dead Man Walking (1995)

Titel 2 Global Warming and Celebrities

This topic looks at Climate Change and has as part of its focus the way celebrities are instrumental in bringing about understanding of this serious topic. Through the analysis of speeches, films, Ted talks and poems the students learn about rhetorical devices, modes of appeal, and argumentation. The class produces a campaign videos at the end of the topic.

Titel 4 Black Lives Matter

This Black Lives Matter topic attempts, through a variety of texts, to give the students, among other things, a historical perspective on race in the US today, and therefore the topic takes as its point of departure slavery and moves from there through the Am. Civil War, the Gettysburg Address, the Jim Crow Laws, the Civil Rights movement to today where the US still seems to have a degree of structural racism in its institutions resulting, for example, in the death of George Floyd. We read diaries, song lyrics, poetry and speeches.The students make presentations on various subjects and we watch Matsouka's Queen and Slim (2019)

In preparation for our study trip to Scotland (29/3-4/4) the students studied Scotland and Scottish identity and how this unites and divides the nation. We looked at how this identity manifests itself through language, history, nationality, symbols, class, and songs.. The topic consisted of fiction, lyrics and non-fiction.
