Titel 1 The Great War

The subject of The Great War looks at the history of the Great War and the subject as perceived, on a personal level, by the British War Poets, especially Rupert Brooke, Wilfred Owen and Sigfried Sassoon. The students will read background articles, study photographs, propaganda posters, read diary entries as well as poetry and fiction. The topic also include an outing to Mindeparken in Aarhus. We finish off with a short story by Hemingway which takes up the subject of homecoming.  We also watch Mendez’ film 1917 and analyse elements of it.

Titel 2 The Great Gatsby and the American Dream

For this topic we read Scott F FitzGerald's novel, The Great Gatsby, from 1925, and in our analysis we put emphasis on key analytical terms like character, theme, narrator and imagery. We also look at the American Dream as a concept and cover its historical roots as well as its role in the shaping of American identity and how this looks today. We read the American Declaration of Independence, the New Collossus, Truslow Adams and up-to-date articles on present day America.

Titel 3 Shakespeare's Macbeth

We read extracts from Macbeth by William Shakespeare and focus on the development of Macbeth's and Lady Macbeth characters, the imagery in the play and what tragedy is. Before reading extracts we study the period of the play and the Elizabethan World Picture. We also watch the film Macbeth by Justin Kurzel (2015)

Titel 4 Australia: The Landscape and the People in it

This topic attempts to give the students an introduction to the Australian continent, its history, its people and its landscape. A variety of texts and poems are read which express the conditions and preoccupations of people at a certain time and in a particular kind of landscape. The topic is partly historical and partly contemporary and some of its focus are on the injustices carried out by the Australian state towards First Australians and another one focusses on living in and surviving the harsh Australian landscape.

The class looks at The Troubles through the lens of history, images, film clips, short stories, song lyrics and poems in order to understand the conflict and the human perspective on this. The students make presentations on a variety of topics within this heading.
