Shakespeare: Romeo and Juliet and the Renaissance

This course focuses on the analysis, interpretation and discussion of Shakespeare's tragedy: Romeo and Juliet.
This course also includes a written assignment.

Working on the tragedy we will especially focus on:
Language: puns, imagery (symbols, metaphors, oxymorons), foreshadowings.
Characters and character development and representation.
Plot
Theme

Key elements and key questions:
The Shakespearean sonnet
The Renaissance
The great chain of being - a hierarchical structure of all matter and life. How does Shakespeare mirror/break it?
Are there any characters/events that disturb the natural order of things?
To what extent is "Romeo and Juliet" a renaissance play?
Why are Shakespeare's works consider to be classics?
How does Luhrmann interpret the original play in his movie?
Who/what is to blame for the outcome of the tragedy?

Titel 4 EXAM: Edgar Allan Poe and Romanticism

This course focuses on the works of Edgar Allan Poe  - and it stands on the shoulders of the course "Crime Fiction".

Through analysis and interpretation of five of his works, we will try to pinpoint Poe's classic features in terms of language, setting, characters, theme and narration.

We also asks: What do these texts intend to bring the readers?

This course also focuses on Gothic/Literary Gothicism, Dark Romanticism, The unreliable narrator and the idea of the danger from within.
This course also includes a quick visit to the paintings of Caspar David Friedrich.

Titel 5 EXAM: Poverty in UK and Social Realism

This course focuses on poverty in the UK and the genre social realism

We ask: How does poverty affect the human condition? How does the fiction we read in this course portray the effect poverty can have on the human condition?
And how can fiction (poetry, songs, films) help us understand this condition?

Academic terms: The academic terms of film analysis and poetry analysis.

Also a focus on the realistic genre - which traits?
"Realism is a depiction of contemporary life and society often addressing social issues. Literary realism tries to communicate everyday life and activities from all levels of society - instead of a romanticized and conventional presentation"

Titel 6 EXAM: Communication (non-fiction)

In this course on non-fiction communication we are focussing on the genres of non-fiction texts - and the tools/devices of rhetorical analysis, discourse analysis and the analysis of argumentation through these three texts:

1) "I Found My Birth Mother. It Didn't Rock My Life - And That's OK" by Ashley Westerman (2018).
2) An excerpt from: "Blood River: A Journey to Africa's Broken Heart"  by Tim Butcher (2009).
3) "The hour you are most alone: how I got trapped by poverty and depression" by Lori Fox (2019)

The course will be based on group work, class discussions and short student presentations
