Shakespeare: Romeo and Juliet and the Renaissance
This course focuses on the analysis, interpretation and discussion of Shakespeare's tragedy: Romeo and Juliet.
This course also includes a written assignment.
Working on the tragedy we will especially focus on:
Language: puns, imagery (symbols, metaphors, oxymorons), foreshadowings.
Characters and character development and representation.

The Shakespearean sonnet
The Renaissance
The great chain of being - a hierarchical structure of all matter and life. How does Shakespeare mirror/break it?
Are there any characters/events that disturb the natural order of things?
To what extent is "Romeo and Juliet" a renaissance play?
Why are Shakespeare's works consider to be classics?
How does Luhrmann interpret the original play in his movie?
Who/what is to blame for the outcome of the tragedy?

This course focuses on poverty in the UK and the genre social realism
We ask: How does poverty affect the human condition? How does the fiction we read in this course portray the effect poverty can have on the human condition?
And how can fiction (poetry, songs, films) help us understand this condition?
Academic terms: The academic terms of film analysis and poetry analysis.
Also a focus on the realistic genre - which traits?
