Titel 1 EXAM The Evil Within

In this course we read texts around the theme of 'evil within'. This means looking at the human psyche and examining whether evil is a natural part of being human. We have focused on reading fiction texts and have worked on analysing the texts using English analytical methods (setting, theme, character, point of view and narrator).

Amongst other things, we have read the following texts:
Billy Ellish; All the Good Girls Go to Hell
Rendezvous
Don't you Hate Having Two Heads
Where the Wild Roses Grow

Useful words:
Setting (physical or psychological setting) and atmosphere.
Character (character development, round characters, flat characters)
Point of view (narrative technique, first person, third person narrators)
Structure (in medias res, ending: predictable, unpredictable, open, closed endings)

Titel 3 EXAM Transitions II

Transitions II is a supplement of the basic 'Transitions' course that all 1st years take in the first three months - this is so that 1f can have this at the exam and so that we all have the same basic texts we can refer (compare with) back to. We have focused on getting to know the basic analysis model for fiction analysis; including working on the setting, on character development and structure and plot in short stories.

We have learned to use terms that we need when analysing texts; including terms to do with character; whether a character is flat or round (and how this shows character development). We have also looked at setting and discussed the difference between the social, physical or psychological setting in a story and the atmosphere it creates. Finally, we have also worked with plot development using terms such as 'in medias res', (in relation to endings); if there is a resolution or an open ending and whether endings are predictable or unpredictable.

While working on transitions our focus has been on how people develop and change - obviously with a focus on the development of young people and the troubles they face when growing up.

Texts read include:
Hemingway's Indian Camp
Mike Skinner song (We Never Went to Church)
Hemingway's 'Cat in the Rain'
and 'The Shining Mountain'

Titel 4 EXAM Culture Clash

The texts in this theme are based around the idea of a clash of cultures in its widest sense. The course starts with the most obvious clash of cultures - that of the clash between different peoples living within a set 'national' culture.

We will read a variety of texts from different English speaking countries; our main focus will be on Australia and the UK; where we will read different texts on the clash between the whites and the Aborigines and the different societies / classes in the UK, and the conflicts that arise in society as a consequence.

Texts include:
The Film: Once Were Warriors (About the Maori peoples of New Zealand)

'Going Home' (a long-ish story about the Aboriginal people)
Kevin Rudd's Apology to the Aboriginal peoples
Freddie Andrews (non-fiction)
+ project work on different aspects of Aboriginal life (art, culture, society, history, geography)

Titel 7 EXAM The Beast Fable and Animal Farm

In this course we will read George Orwell's book 'Animal Farm' as our starting point. We will use the book to help us understand why writers write stories about talking animals and how these stories help the writer to put a message across and appeal to a wider reading audience.

We will work on the idea of the beast or animal fable and how this trope has been used in literature as far back as Ancient Greece in Aesops Fables.

Other works we might read in connection with the course include:
Oscar Wilde's fairy story 'The Happy Prince' (which has a talking statue and a talking swallow)

We have looked at the animal fable and discussed how these animals have both characteristics that we associate with the animal itself (Pigs = inteliigence); but also how they also show human traits in the stories
e.g. (The pigs in Animal Farm love food and luxury).

Thus these stories are written both for children and for adults;
The child reader recognises the animal's traits while the adult reader understands that humans, like pigs, have baser instincts that we need to keep in check to maintain our humanity.

We looked at concepts such as 'assimilation, integration, multiculturalism, melting pot and the salad bowl'. We have also looked at the influence Spanish on the English language in areas where Hispanic peoples live; i.e. the role of English as a Lingua Franca

After 3a wrote their SRO we worked more generally on the American dream; where we read non-fiction and fiction texts.
We started the course with a short focus on the history of the USA, in order to gain an understanding of the American psyche and how the colonisation of America and the push to the West in the 1800's have contributed to the ideal of 'a pioneer spirit'.

The course started with us reading 'The New Colossus' (the poem from the foot of the Statue of Liberty. This is meant as an introduction to the ideals that lie behind the American Dream. Texts read also include texts on the American Frontier Spirit, the study of the film 'Into the Wild' from 2004.

Titel 10 EXAM Post-modernism; from Hemingway to Fight Club

We will examine postmodern literature and how it reflects the age we live in today.

We will start by reading one of Hemingway's works, as it can be seen as a natural area to start to examine the development from the modern era to the post-modern. We will continue by reading some of Carver's work and explore the post-modern in his literature.

We have worked on the development of the 'iceberg prinicple' in which 7/8ths of the story is hidden below the surface to Carver's minimalistic style. We have also worked on the main characters' sense of isolation and confusion and how this reflects our 'post-modern' society.

We have focused on literary history: working on the post-modern era and the development that takes place after 1945 within literature.

We started the course reading:
Hemingway's 'Cat in the Rain';

Then we read Carver texts including:
'Popular Mechanics'
'Tell The Women We're Going'
'So Much Water So Close to Home'
'Neigbors'

We also saw the film 'Fight Club' and read some literary texts from the genre of Dick Lit; including: 'Apathy and Other Small Victories'

Faglig fokus:
- væsentlige strømninger i amerikansk litteraturhistorie
- væsentlige kulturelle og samfundsfaglige forhold i USA

Concepts we have worked on in class include:

Titel 12 Reading a classic work

In this course the pupils will be able to choose one of several books within a particular theme (Horror, Dystopia, Family life, War/ Racism, Mental illness, Love).

The idea then is that the pupils will meet in reading circles to discuss the book; similar to the reading circles they worked in while we read Animal Farm. The pupils build up a joint website (for their own revision and for subject assessment). Finally, they will hand in individual papers discussing one of the important aspects of the book they have worked on.

Max. three-four pupils in each group.

Titel 13 EXAM Shakespeare's Macbeth

In this course we have listened to, read and seen Shakespeare's work and play 'Macbeth'.

We have spent time reading the play together both in class and at home.

While reading Mabeth, our focus has been to understand the two main characters and look at the relationship between them (Macbeth and Lady Macbeth).

Much of the work on the themes in the play was done through pupil participation and project work; here the pupils taught the class - focusing on important aspects of the play.

During the course, we have :
1. attempted to understand the two main characters and look at the relationship between them (Macbeth and Lady Macbeth).
2. looked at the language of the play and examined how English has developed since the period.
3. We attempted to place the novel within its historical context and looked at how the play reflects the thinking of the times; - that there is a natural 'cosmic order' in the universe that is disturbed by the murder of the king; how this order had to be 're-established' before society could function properly again.
4. We examined tragedy and how it affected the characters within the context of the tragedy: we learn new terms such as hubris, tragic flaws, tragedy, pride, humanity, gender and sex.
5. Finally, we looked at how Macbeth has influenced literature since the 1600s when it was written. Here we saw an episode of 'House of Cards'

Faglig fokus:
