Pupils will learn the difference between utopias and dystopias and the traits that are connected to dystopias. The pupils will start off by seeing the film "I, Robot" and work with the characteristics of a dystopia. The pupils will then read the novel The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins from 2008. The American Dream and Nightmare
This theme has been read in a collaboration with history, and more importantly, the pupil's English teacher in Boston, Massachussets. As preparation for the trip the students studied the historical background behind The American Dream and read about important American values. We also discussed how the current immigration problems have made The American Dream a nighmare for the immigrants who call the US their home. At Bunker Hill College, the pupils read several texts that centered on American traits such as individualism, freedom, the importance of nature, morality and diversity. On their return, students worked on a reflective assignment where they picked texts they had worked and how they contributed to their understanding of American society and values.

Class in the UK
This theme will have its focus on Britain as a class society. We will especially look at the differences between the upper class and the working class in British society. We will read an article on how education at elite schools like Oxford and Cambridge is connected with privilege and access to power and politics. Students will analyze scenes from The Riot Club with a focus on its portrayal of the elite. As a contrast to upper-class society the students will look at texts that portray the working class and values that are connected to these. They will watch a video about two very different areas with a upper-class and working-class background in the video on Kennsington, London and Kennsington, Liverpool. They will also read about the immigrants that lived in Grenfell Towers in Kennsington, and how the response to the fire that burned down the towers is seen as a conflict of social class. Furthermore, pupils will listen to the different dialects in England, including the cockney accent, as well as learn about received pronunciation which often signals an upper class background.
Texts:
"Britain's Class Divide: Can Oxbridge Solve It's Own Privilege Problem?", Times Magazine Online, January 8th, 2018.
"Common People" by The Pulp (1995)
