Titel 5 Love and relationships (exam 2026).

A topic about love, loss and longing which includes the following aspects:
-Conventional love poetry and inverted love poems (with cynical, negative, or heartbreaking views on love).
-Love marriages and arranged marriages.
-Innocent love, twisted love and crossing sexual boundaries.

In order to get under the skin of imagery students create pick-up lines and poems that require plenty of metaphors and similes.  They will also practise words such as: Alliteration, personification, stanza, rhyme/rhythm, contrasts and imagery. Other literary terms we have applied:  Narrator (1. and 3.) and perspective (e.g. reliable/unreliable).

Briefly, we have looked into some conventional poetry traits by the Italian lyric poet Petrarch (1304–74) in order to detect how other poets have inverted these conventions:
-an idealized mistress (poetry praising the beauty of the woman in exaggerated manner).
-the mistress is often absent or otherwise unavailable
-the mistress is chaste
-the poet is less worth than the mistress.

Finally we have tried to categorize different types of love poetry in relation to different types of love:

Eros (sexual passion)
Philia (deep friendship and platonic)
Ludus (playful love, dating?)
Agape (love for everyone/selfless love/not expect anything in return)
Pragma (longstanding love, commitment)
Philautia (love of the self)
Storge (parental love)
Mania (obsessive love)

Titel 8 Jamaica (exam 2026).

Jamaica's National Motto, ‘Out of many, one people’ reflects the diversity of the Jamaican people.

Jamaica is not just sun, sea and sand but also a mix of different races, cultures and religions due to its past history of colonization. It became independent from Britain in 1962, but remains a member of the British Commonwealth.

We will look at Jamaica past and present - in language, songs and music - and also examine informal/spoken language and symbols (imagery) in literature.

Jamaicans speak English as the official language, but they also speak Jamaican Patois. We will try to look a little bit into the latter.

Finally, we will relate Jamaica's past to the Windrush Generation.

Shortage of labour in Britain after World War II and and increased ease of international movement pulled a large number of immigrants from the former British Empire to Britain and to London. Back then all "colonial subjects" were given the right to freely reside and study in Britain and many did: Approximately three million people arrived in the late 1940s-1970s. Later the tides turned and racial tension rose - culminating perhaps in 2018 with the "Windrush scandal" and the wrongful deportation of 83 people of Caribbean descent who had helped rebuild e.g. London after WW2. The heritage from these immigrants is immanent in Britain today - for instance in the language (MLE/Jafaican), which we will examine a bit.

We will also practise the terms of mataphors, symbols and similes.

Core Texts:

Titel 12 Perceptions of City Life

A short theme about urban life - the positive and negative aspects of living in small spaces, not knowing your neighbours and being surrounded by poverty and great culture/parks.

Some of the questions we will deal with in relation to the topic citylife" are:
- How is it different living in a city as opposed to the countryside?
- How are urbanites shaped by the city?
- Why do an increasing amount of people prefer to live in cities?

To put the topic into perspective we discussed some quotes about how living in a big city affects how human beings behave and relate to each other by the American sociologist Louis Wirth. In 1938 he studied "urbanism" and wrote a scientific essay called "Urbanism as a Way of Life". The quotes are listed below after our primary sources.

American Sociologist Louis Wirth's quotes about city dwellers/ urbanites from 1938:

A
"The larger the number of persons in a state of interaction with one another the lower is the level of communication… Typically, our physical contacts are close but our social contacts are distant. The necessary frequent movement of great numbers of individuals in a congested habitat gives occasion to friction and irritation. Nervous tensions which derive from such personal frustrations are accentuated by the rapid tempo and the complicated technology under which life in dense areas must be lived. The close living together and working together of individuals who have no sentimental and emotional ties foster a spirit of competition, aggrandizement, and mutual exploitation."

B
"The city is characterized by secondary rather than primary contacts. The contacts of the city may indeed be face to face, but they are nevertheless impersonal, superficial, transitory, and segmental. The reserve, the indifference, and the blasé outlook which urbanites manifest in their relationships may thus be regarded as devices for immunizing themselves against the personal claims and expectations of others.
The superficiality, the anonymity, and the transitory character of urban-social relations make intelligible, also, the sophistication and the rationality generally ascribed to city-dwellers. "

Titel 13 Evil & Macbeth (exam 26)

Is man born good or evil?
- That is a questions we will try to answer when working on this theme which also includes the play Macbeth by Shakespeare.

First we will try to categorize different types of evil and talk about responsibility and punishment. Next we will draw parallels to the world of literature.

The categories of evil used are presented in the book: "Psykologiens veje" by Ole Schultz Larsen (Systime, 2008). He uses the terms: sardistic evil (i.e. someone taking pleasure in inflicting pain on others) instrumental evil (someone who wants to achieve something for personal gratification), idealistic evil (a person who wants to change the world to fit with his/her ideals  - e..g Nazism or Anders Breivik) and stupid evil.

We are already acquainted with Patrick Bateman and Dexter - from our post-modern theme - but now we will also look at "instrumental evil"  as  represented by Lady Macbeth and Macbeth and their lust for power in Macbeth. How do they develop throughout the play and what are the physical and psychological effects of those who seek power for its own sake?
