Twisted Minds and stories:

Besides introducing and repeating a number of literary terms, we will in the course of this topic examine how stories with a plot twist have other purposes than creating suspence and surprise. Themes like "Urbanism", "Madness", "Love", "Greed" etc. can be found in the texts. Can the texts thus give us insight into our own lives?

Titel 2 Family

FAMILY:
Being a child or parent in a family involves navigating a complex array of experiences and responsibilities. For children, family is the primary environment where they learn, grow, and develop their identity. It is within the family that children first encounter love, support, and guidance, forming the foundation of their values and social skills. However, in many families, many conflicts arise, and thus, family life is not always pleasant.

Parents, on the other hand, take on the critical role of caregivers and role models. Howevner, many parents also find it hard to live up the societal norms that are implied in being a good and caring parent.

In the text about "family", we have taken a look at some of the challenges parents and children face.

Texts and materials we have read:

Kelly Cherry: The Parents (short story)

Raymond Carver: Popular Mechanics (short story)

Titel 3 South Africa (EXAM)

South Africa  - Apartheid og post-apartheid

In this theme, we examined the living conditions of the Black and Coloured populations during apartheid. How did the oppression manifest itself concretely for the oppressed Black majority? How did the white minority live in the country?

Following this, we look at the period after the abolition of apartheid. Mandela's presidency heralded new a new era for the population as a whole. How was this change received by the various population groups? What was Mandela’s significance as president for the new post-apartheid South Africa?

Black Voices:

"We went from picking cotton, to chaingang line chopping/To be-bopping, to hip-hopping." These are the words of American rapper Mos Def, pointing to the connection between hip-hop/rap and African American history. How and why hip-hop emerged, and how the genre has evolved since then, are some of the aspects we have worked on in this theme. We have primarily used rap lyrics, music videos, and films as our starting points to gain a deeper understanding of the genre, as well as insights into African American history and culture.

Titel 5 Multiculture in the UK / Immigration (EXAM)

Multicultural Britain:

What does Great Britain look like today? What is or was the motivation for immigrants to go to the United Kingdom? What image of multicultural Britain is presented in literature?

We have examined texts and material that touch upon the conflicts arising between generations within the family, as seen in the short story "Chameleon" by Ranbir Sahota and, notably "My Son the Fanatic" by Hanif Kureishi. In the poem "Mr and Mrs Xenophobia" by John Agard, a reaction to immigration is shown.

In the article "The Man Who Fell to Earth," one senses the motivation of immigrants to come to Britain and the drastic methods used to enter the country as an illegal immigrant.
The film East is East uses humor to portray life in a working-class neighborhood where diversity is significant—both in the local area and within the family - family serves as the focal point of the plot.

Finally, we have read about the latest developments in British politics, with a particular focus on the role of the media and new political movements that have immigration policy high on their agenda.
