Titel 1 Experiencing War (England) (Exam)

The focus of this theme is the way the individual experiences war. The texts first of all cover heroism and the effects of WW1 on the individual and in literature. This theme is traced both in WW1 poetry and in Tolkien’s The Hobbit. Furthermore, as a parallel to the impact WW1 had on the view of heroism and war, the theme also deals with Shakespeare’s Macbeth and the main character’s decline from the classical war hero to the mad tyrant due to his ambition for power.

Titel 3 England and Empire - part 2 (Exam)

This theme deals with England and its empire. The primary focus is the clash between Europeans and natives and the influence of the British culture in the colonies. As a part of the latter, the development of the English language has been dealt with. This includes a focus on how language is influenced by shifts in power, how language is used as power, and how the language has been influenced by the colonies. Besides the linguistic focus the materials used cover historical issues about imperialism in general and South Africa and India in particular. Part 1 one of the theme focusing on South Africa was read with the B-level students in 2g.
