Star-Crossed Lovers: R&J, Normal People EXAM
In addition to Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, we will read Sally Rooney’s "Normal People" focusing on the complex relationship between Connell and Marianne. Perhaps their love story, marked by emotional conflict and societal pressures, mirrors the struggles of Shakespeare's star-crossed lovers?
Our reading will focus on themes of intimacy, vulnerability, and social class and how these external factors shape identities and relationships.
Furthermore, the theme deals with the Elizabethan world picture and the clash between the medieval thought of community and the Renaissant focus on individuality. We will work with "Romeo and Juliet" looking at themes such as faith, love, reason and passion, the four humours, tragic heroes and tragic irony. Furthermore, students will gain knowledge of literary elements like the sonnet, the iambic pentameter, blank verse, tragic irony and a prologue.
