Titel 1 Evil

This theme deals with the concept of evil as portrayed in both fiction and non-fiction. How can we define evil? Do we need evil to understand what is good? Is man fundamentally evil or good - or do we all possess both elements? What triggers evil and what prevents it from surfacing? Why are we so fascinated by evil?

Drawing from non-fiction materials, the course utilizes the insights of Norwegian philosopher Lars Fr. H. Svendsen, particularly his theories on natural evil and moral evil. These theories will be applied to both fictional and real-life examples, providing a comprehensive perspective on the subject. The interplay between nature and nurture in shaping an individual's behavior and personality traits will also be a key focus.

In fictional texts, we examine the serial killer and his motives, and we look at how literary devices help portray evil.

Central terms:
Natural evil vs. moral evil and the four subtypes of moral evil: sadistic evil, instrumental evil, idealistic evil, thoughtless evil.
Nature vs. Nurture
Foreshadowing

Titel 3 Britain: Empire and Multiculturalism EKSAMEN

Through fiction and non-fiction, this course examines the literatures and values of Britain as a colonial power and as a modern multicultural society. We will look at what it means to be British and what challenges we see in British society today. Initially, the students work with the historical context of the British Empire – what was it and how did it influence the world? We investigate Britain’s self-image through Kipling, Macauley and Orwell. Leaping onwards, we explore Britain as a multicultural society through John Agard and Hanif Kureishi. We will also read an article that explores the issues of immigration and we will watch an episode from the documentary “Harry & Meghan” to explore how the media’s portrayal of Meghan Markle echoes colonial narratives and stereotypes about race and identity, but also how their relationship reflects a more diverse and multicultural Britain. Finally, this course maps English as a lingua franca, looking at what it means and how it became the world’s lingua franca.

Titel 4 The American Promise EKSAMEN

The American Promise and the Upcoming Presidential Election

Course description

The course explores the ideas of “The American Promise”. It goes back in time to the European immigrants and pioneers who moved west in search of new land and new opportunities more than 300 years ago. By doing that, it investigates core American values and American self-perception through both fiction and non-fiction.

Why is that important? It’s important because there’s a presidential election campaign going on right now and a presidential election coming up on November 5, 2024. The news media, both here in Denmark and abroad, will be covering the election, and to be able to understand a lot of issues more thoroughly, it’s useful to know about American history and core American values. The US is still the most powerful country globally, and what happens in US politics has an impact on us in Denmark and in Europe.

So, in other words, the course includes an exploration of important aspects of American history, American values and identity as well as the contemporary reality of the US facing an important election very soon.

The course includes the following texts:

Fiction

• Emma Lazarus, “The New Colossus” (1883), The Faber Book of America, ed. Christopher Ricks and William Lance (Faber and Faber, 1994) (poem).

• Bobb Hamilton, “A father tells his son about the Statue of Liberty”, (Detroit Broadside Press, 1971) (poem).

Titel 6 A Changing World EKSAMEN

The aim of this course is to gain an understanding of the changes that occurred in the period from the late 19th century to 1950 in Britain and the USA and to examine more closely the changes that occurred in the literature of the time, also called the Modernist period or Modernism. The period is interesting to work with because it is characterized by profound changes that represent a breakaway from the conventions and values of the past. Many writers of the Modernist period experimented with both forms and themes, and they drew attention to, among other things, man’s rootlessness, the lack of meaning and common values, and the psychological responses to these changes.
The focus of this course will be on different aspects of change in this period: The First World War and changes in relationships. We will start by reading different poems that deal with the First World War in different ways, and which represent different approaches when it comes to style and form. We will also read several short stories by one the great writers of the period, Ernest Hemingway, part of a generation of artists calling themselves “The Lost Generation”. Hemingway’s style of writing marked a break with traditional styles of writing and many writers have subsequently been inspired by his style.

Titel 8 Lovers Now and Then II EKSAMEN

Course description:
In this course we’re going to focus on “Lovers Then and Now”. In the first part of the course, we focused on the “now” as expressed in the complex relationship between Marianne and Connell in Sally Rooney’s Normal People. Here we turn our attention towards the “then” as portrayed in the troubled relationship between the star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet, in Shakespeare’s tragedy Romeo and Juliet from 1597
Apart from excerpts from Shakespeare’s tragedy Romeo and Juliet, we’re also going to read two of Shakespeare’s love sonnets.
To be able to understand Romeo and Juliet and the obstacles they face, we need to go back in time and gain an understanding of the Elizabethan world view and the world of the theater at Shakespeare’s time. Furthermore, you will gain knowledge of literary elements such as for example the sonnet, iambic pentameter, blank verse, tragic irony and what a prologue is.

Titel 9 Realism EKSAMEN

Course description:
In this very last English course, we’re going to look at an ism that is both very popular and persistent. It’s been around for a long time and it’s still here: realism. It dates back to the late 19th century and is a literary movement that emphasises the importance of depicting life as it is rather than idealizing it. In that sense it was a reaction against romanticism, which realists perceived as ‘unrealistic’ with its focus on grand emotions, imagination, glorification of nature, heroic characters, and dramatic settings. Instead, realists sought to portray life and people in a down-to-earth and straightforward way. We’re going to read John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, published in 1937, which is a classic short novel (novella), portraying the life of the two characters Lennie and George and their hardships in the US during the Depression in the 1930s. We’re also going to read a more contemporary short story by Maggie Gee, “The Artist”, which focuses on modern-day issues such as immigration, inequality and prejudice. Finally, because we’re going to focus so much on fiction, an excerpt from a non-fiction work has been included: Darren McGarvey’s Poverty Safari. Understanding the Anger of Britain's Underclass, which deals with his own experiences growing up in Scotland, experiencing poverty and social inequality at first hand.
