Evil - EKSAMEN
This theme deals with the concept of evil and the way it is portrayed in both fiction and non-fiction. How can we define evil? Do we need evil to understand what is good? Is man fundamentally evil or good - or do we all possess both elements? What triggers evil and what prevents it from surfacing? Why are we so fascinated by evil?
The TED talk by Philip Zimbardo on the psychology of evil will serve as a point of reference and the concept of foreshadowing is introduced when working with a selection of the texts. Moreover, the students will work with four types of evil: sadistic evil, thoughtless evil, instrumental evil and idealistic evil. Lastly, they will be introduced to the nature vs. nurture debate.

Britain: Empire and Multiculturalism - EKSAMEN
Through fiction and non-fiction, this course examines the literatures and values of Britain as a colonial power and as a modern multicultural society. We will look at what it means to be British and what challenges we see in British society today. Initially, the students work with the historical context of the British Empire – what was it and how did it influence the world? We investigate Britain’s self-image through Kipling, Macauley and Orwell. Leaping onwards, we explore Britain as a multicultural society through John Agard and Hanif Kureishi. We will also read an article that explores the issues of immigration. Finally, this course maps English as a lingua franca, looking at what it means and how it became the world’s lingua franca.

Black Voices - EKSAMEN
In 1897 the African American sociologist and civil rights leader W.E.B. Du Bois wrote about the identity of Black Americans: “An American, a Negro; two souls, two thoughts, two unreconciled strivings; two warring ideals in one dark body, whose dogged strength alone keeps it from being torn asunder.”
This feeling of being black in America is still relevant today even after the first African American President took office in 2008. Because what does it mean to be African American, and what is the public face of black America today? This course explores African American identity throughout the history of the U.S. with a particular emphasis on how selected African Americans have given voice to inequalities of Black America. Dealing with historical sources, from slave narratives to different speeches of the Civil Rights Movement, as well as different literary and cultural representations of racial struggles in the US, we strive to get a general image of this particular issue in America.

Polarization in the US (SRO)

Man and Nature - EKSAMEN
This theme explores how nature is portrayed in literature and media today - man's impact on the environment, climate discourse and cli-fi.
We will also deal with the thoughts, ideas, and tendencies of the Romantic Age and focus on the most iconic British writers of the time, but also on historical events and significant movements of the period. Working with the texts in the theme, we'll reflect on what literature is, how it gains life, and what power it has when it comes to human rights and inspiration. We'll also gain a vocabulary and a theoretical framework to qualify our work with the analysis and interpretation of the texts included.

Modernism - EKSAMEN
Modernism (or the Modernist period) is interesting to work with because it is characterized by profound changes that represent a breakaway from the conventions and values of the past. Many writers of the Modernist period experimented with both forms and themes, and they drew attention to, among other things, man’s rootlessness, the lack of meaning and common values, and the psychological responses to these changes.
The focus of this course will be on different aspects of this period: The First World War and Minimalism.
We will start by reading different poems that deal with the First World War in different ways, and which represent different approaches when it comes to style and form. We will also read short stories by one the great writers of the period, Ernest Hemingway, part of a generation of artists calling themselves “The Lost Generation”. Hemingway’s style of writing marked a break with traditional styles of writing and many writers have subsequently been inspired by his style.
Finally, we’ll read the very famous novel, The Great Gatsy.
The following material is included in the course:
Fiction - kernestof:
Jessie Pope,”The Call” in Lis Ramberg Beyer, ”Timeless Themes”, chapter 2, ”Attitudes to War”, p. 84-85.
Siegfried Sassoon, “Base Details” (1918). Printed in Denis Delaney et al., “Fields of Vision”, volume 2, (Longman 2010). (poetry)
Siegfried Sassoon, The Hero
Yeats, The Second Coming
Ernest Hemingway, “Hills Like White Elephants” (1927),
Ernest Hemingway, "A Clean Well-Lighted Place" (1933).
F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby (1925)
