Unit Title: The U.S.A. -- Let Freedom Ring
Unit Objective: This unit will introduce students to the historical and political foundation of the United States of America with special focus on main events leading up to the American Revolution. The connection between founding legal documents and the current debate about birthright citizenship will also be examined. Finally, the historical and cultural background for the recent "No Kings" protests will be examined.
Key Concepts: personal freedom as a core American value, "My Country 'Tis of Thee" (1832) vs. "God Save the King" (1745), the meaning and concept of the phrase "E pluribus unum," the Stamp Act of 1765, the Declaratory Act of 1766, the view of King George III in the American colonies, the Boston Massacre of 1770, the Boston Tea Party, The Coercive Acts of 1774, The Declaration of Independence, The Civil Rights Act of 1866, the background for and current debate about birthright citizenship including principles of "ius soli" vs. "ius sanguinis" vs. naturalization + the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution (adopted on July 9, 1868), Executive Order 14160 Sections 1 & 2 (January 2025), the historical and cultural context for the recent "No Kings" protests, the 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution (adopted on February 27, 1951), the 25th Amendment to the US Constitution (adopted on February 10, 1967)
