Titel 7 Black Voices USA [EXAM]

The course introduces historical milestones that are particularly defining for African Americans’ place and opportunities in American society. We focus especially on “segregation” (racial separation and discrimination, with emphasis on Jim Crow) and the Civil Rights Movement (central here are Martin Luther King and Malcolm X’s different approaches to the issue and their significance for the United States today). Additionally, we examine the language of the two, focusing on their use of rhetorical devices.

Based on this historical framework, we then examine structural racism in a contemporary American context. In extension of this, we work with the purpose and significance of mass incarceration in the US through the documentary "13th". Additionally, the students work with presentations on a range of musical inputs from Billie Holiday to NWA, thus focusing on the link between African American history and the portrayal of African American culture and identity.

Titel 8 I Was There: Narrative non-fiction and journalism

The course "I Was There: Narrative non-fiction and journalism" focuses on how journalism has been shaped from mainly focusing on facts and aiming at objectivity into more adventurous subgenres or narrative styles, our main focus being gonzo-journalism.

We experiment with writing in the style of gonzo ourselves by reporting on a theatre field trip watching the fabulous dancing show "Dancing on my own": a cacophony of bodily expressions set to the music of Robyn. The students write in line with their own sensory impressions, but are free to push reality to its psychedelic limits through their prose.

Fokus:
- genre- og stilistiske træk i særligt gonzo-journalistikken
- produktorienteret kreativ skrivning

Titel 9 The Art of Evil [EXAM]

We examine evil from multiple angles aiming to widen our understanding of the
concept. According to anthropologists, the perception of evil is a culturally subjective
phenomenon; however, it exists in all human cultures. Arguably, evil fascinates and
entertains us just as much as it disgusts us. But is evil simply the opposite of good, a
shallow dichotomy, or is there more to gain from examining this topic?
We investigate the place of evil in literature and popular culture (in a broad sense,
and using the student's experience with evil in media as a reference), with the
character of Dexter Morgan from the popular tv-series"Dexter" as our main point of reference.

Focuses in the course:
- Definition of evil through knowledge of theories on four types of evil [Svendsen]
- Discussion of the issues that arise when evil is used as a concept
- Antiheroes and their characteristics in contrast to the classical protagonist
- Discussion of how a person becomes evil (“nature vs. nurture”), including to what extent a person is responsible for their evil actions and whether such actions can be understood or justified
- Essay focusing on characterization, narrative technique, and theme
