Titel 1 Shakespeare's Sonnets and Plays (EKSAMEN)

Course description:
This unit on Shakespeare's sonnets and plays focuses on the themes of love, romance, and power dynamics in selected sonnets and excerpts from the plays Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth. Terms such as iambic pentameter, blank verse, imagery, soliloquy, and characterization are applied in the analysis of sonnets and plays, and it is discussed how the themes and conflicts are presented differently in these genres. It is also discussed how Shakespeare and his characters use ambiguity and equivocation to add complexity and nuance to the conflicts depicted in the plays as well as the sonnets. In addition, it is discussed how Shakespearean tragedy also reflects elements in the Elizabethan Era, and how it reflects the Elizabethan world picture (the great chain of being, cosmic order, and the divine rights of kings).
