Titel 1 Stephen King and horror fiction

LÆRINGSMÅL:
The course will serve as an introduction to the horror genre and discuss its appeal and how it may be defined. In particular, we will focus on some of its central elements such as setting, atmosphere, foreshadowing, creation of suspense, plot etc. Furthermore, we will try to identify aspects that are characteristic to Stephen King’s style of writing such as the terror/horror/gross out, environment and character. It will also introduce Sigmund Freud's division of the human psyche into the id, th egeo and the superego.

Our reading of horror fiction will serve as a further development of our ability to analyze and interpret a text, and we will develop our vocabulary as well.

Titel 2 Crime and punishment in America

Course objectives
We will explore aspects of the American penal system such as reasons why we punish criminals as well as reasons why some people call for a change of the penal system. In particular, we will discuss race and inequality in relation to incarceration, and we will also consider whether capital punishment is a good idea or not.
Through non-fiction analysis (the rhetorical pentagram, discourse analysis) we will read a number of non-fiction texts that offer various perspectives on crime and punishment.

Titel 9 The American Dream 2 + US Election
