Titel 4 Superheroes

The "Superheroes" course has explored the evolution, cultural significance, and political impact of superheroes in literature and media. Students have analyzed comic books, films, and articles to examine the superhero as a uniquely American phenomenon and as a reflection of societal values. The historical development of superhero narratives has been traced, with a focus on themes such as heroism, morality, and propaganda.

Throughout the course, students have engaged with key topics including race and gender representation, the role of superheroes in wartime propaganda, and the intersection of mythology and modern storytelling. Analytical skills have been developed through discussions, written assignments, and film studies, such as the analysis of The Dark Knight and The Amazing Spider-Man #36. Critical perspectives on racebending, gender identity, and objectification in superhero media have also been considered.

Students have applied the PEE-method to structure their arguments and enhance their academic writing. By the end of the course, they have gained an in-depth understanding of how superheroes function as cultural symbols, reflecting and shaping political and social discourse in contemporary society.

Titel 5 Short Stories

This course has introduced students to the short story as a unique literary form, with a focus on conciseness, structure, and emotional impact. Students have explored the defining features of short stories and compared them to other narrative formats, such as novels. Throughout the course, we have analyzed a range of fiction short stories with attention to narrative structure and use of literary devices (particularly foreshadowing, contrastive imagery, and symbolism). Students have practiced identifying elements of plot structure in these texts while applying subject-specific terminology to their analyses (e.g. setting, narrator, plot, point of view).

Another central aim in this course has been to develop students' oral proficiency. As such, students have given short oral presentations with an emphasis on communicating thematic and/or symbolic features in a given text.

By the end of the course, students have gained both analytical and expressive skills through reading, discussion, writing, and oral performance.
