American dreams
We will look into the idea and promise of ’The American Dream’, explore what it means, and assess whether or not the dream is still alive today. As we move along, we will identify core American values and touch upon four versions of the American dream: The immigrant dream, the middleclass dream, the entrepreneurial dream, and the new American dream.
Key words are: Individuality, freedom, mobility, equality/inequality, privilege, immigration and education.

Novel: The Collector
The purpose of reading the novel is to actually read a novel, a complete work, at your own pace. The book club form makes you work in small groups, and you are in charge of analytical focus points, summaries and debate. Along the way we will also touch upon aspects like conflict, characterization, environment and the gothic genre, social class, types of love, the unreliable narrator, and intertextuality. In order to understand some of the intertextual references you will become familiar with the outline of Shakespeare's the Tempest and Romeo and Juliet.

WWI poetry
The course will introduce to WWI with special focus on Britain’s engagement in the Great War. The course material addresses questions such as:
Why did the young men go?
How did they deal with the unexpected realities of the first full-scale industrialised war?
Why did shellshock become an important new word in the English language?
What roles were assigned to the women behind the lines?
How could the gap between the Home Front and the real frontline be bridged?
What is the story behind the poppy of Remembrance Day?
Is Remembrance Day still relevant today? – WWI ended more than 100 years ago.
We will practice analytical skill, consider genre characteristics and develop our vocabulary and conversational skill.
Key terms are: Stanza, verse line, speaker, patriotism, masculinity, femininity, propaganda, mobilization, allied powers vs. central powers, trench warfare, no man's land, shell shock, imperialism.
