Third Culture Kids
In this unit, the focus has been on introducing different analysis tools and applying them to different types of texts related to the topic of Third Culture Kids. The students have also been asked to reflect and discuss how their parents' choices on how and where to live have affected them in their first hand-in (assignment 1: Growing up in a globalized world). We have both worked with non-fiction (blog, feature article, TedX speech) and fiction (short stories and short film)
At the end of the unit, we have branched out thematically and presented web comics in small groups as preparation for reading a graphic novel as part of the next unit.
Core materials:
"Third Culture Kids: Citizens of everywhere and nowhere" (feature article)
"I used to live here once" (short story)
"Green Velvet" (short story)
Blog by Feroz Salam
"The Road Home" (shortfilm) https://roadhomefilm.com/
"Third Culture Kids: the impact of growing up in a globalized world" (TedX speech by Ruth Van Reken - used for assignment 1)
Bo Høpfner Clausen: "Getting Graphic" pp. 6-16 - theory introducing the genre and characteristics of the graphic novel
Grammar in focus:
- concord between the subject and the verb
- the genitive (especially how to place apostrophes correctly)
- word order
- adjectives and adverbs

We started with basic American history and the Declaration of Independence and have covered the following topics: individual freedom, self-reliance, equality of opportunity, material wealth, hard work , the frontier and the concept of the American dream.
During the unit, there has also been an emphasis on analysis of a graphic novel and how this novel reflects on the American dream and immigration. We have also worked with rhetorical analysis of "The Gettysburg address" by Lincoln.

Evil (American literary history)
ONLY A DRAFT - WILLL BE REVISED
Kernestof:
Edgar Allan Poe: “The Tell-Tale Heart” (1843) (Fields of Vision)
Stephen King: “Why We Crave Horror Movies” (1982) (fra Horror, Systime online)
Bret Easton Ellis: "Killing Child at Zoo" (1991) (Wider Contexts), uddrag fra romanen American Psycho.
American Psycho directed by Mary Harron (2000) (film)
Sean Spence: “Bad or Mad” (2004) (fra Wider Contexts)
Supplerende:
Edgar Allan Poe: “The Raven” (1845) (digt)
Tim Burton: “Vincent” (1982) (kortfilm)

Gender, sexuality and inequality
ONLY A DRAFT - WILL BE REVISED
Her lærer vi om og diskuterer blandt andet følgende koncepter: norms, normative, gender as a spectrum, non-binary, transgender, privilege, polyamory, monogamy, intersectionality, allyship
