Titel 1 Forløb#1 An introduction to The US and its history

Dette forløb har til hensigt at introducere eleverne overordnet til USA og beskæftige sig med forskellige aspekter af amerikansk historie og kultur, med henblik på forståelse af contemporary America. Forløbet vil kort dække basic facts om landet, overordnet historisk om før- og efter koloniseringen, landets forhold til religion, samt slavetiden og dens betydning for nutidens raceproblematikker. Alt dette med henblik på, at skabe et fundament til forståelse af, og evt. viderearbejde med, 'contemporary America' og drage de historiske paralleler for øget forståelse af moderne problematikker.

Derudover har der været fokus på skriftlighed, med fokus på essay struktur (5-body paragraph essays osv.) hvor de har skrevet om "The US as a Melting Pot". Dertil har vi yderligere arbejdet grammatisk med følgende elementer:

Titel 2 Forløb#2 - Dystopia

Forløb om 'Dystopias', med fokus på og undersøgelse af hvad begrebet dækker, både helt formelt, men også i litteraturen. Hvad er dystopi og hvordan bruges det i engelsk litteratur og med hvilket formål? Forløbet bruger George Orwells "Animal Farm" som hovedværk, med en dertilhørende workbook der arbejdes med undervejs. Derudover læser vi forskellige dystopian short stories og ser slutteligt en film, for at skabe en dybdegående forståelse af dystopiske fortællinger og hvad de er for en størrelse.

Titel 3 Forløb#3 - The Presidential Election

The Presidential Election

The aim of this theme is to cover the run up of the up-and-coming American election on the 5th November 2024 contested by Donald John Trump (Republican Nominee) & Kamilla Devi Harris (Democratic Nominee).   
-
Other than the two political parties and the candidates, our main focus will be on the American Political systems, exploring fundamental principles like check and balances, the political insitutions,  the electoral system, the winner takes all principle and so forth.

Besides the presidential election, we will also work with the English Written Examination assignment: writing a business E-mail.  This theme shall therefore give focus to E-mail writing.

Titel 5 Forløb#5 - India and Colonialism

The aim of this theme is to explore India today and its background as a colony of the British Empire. The course will start off with a brief introduction to the rise and, in particular, the fall of the British Empire and how it affects India even today. Meanwhile we will also explore basic info about India, their primary industries, their political leadership today and the divide between rich and poor India.

Besides this, we will also focus on how to write an Argumentative Essay and do various grammar exercises throughout the course

Titel 6 Forløb#6 - Brexit and Immigration

Brexit and Immigration – From Empire to Populism

We will explore how Britain transformed from the largest empire in human history, with colonies across the globe, to a nation that has increasingly turned inward. We will examine how British identity has evolved, and how post-empire immigration in particular has shaped this change. Brexit will serve as the primary example of this culmination in modern times. Meanwhile we will also examine the Brexit campaigns themselves and look at other factors that ultimately caused the people to vote "Leave". We will look at speeches, campaign materials and not to mention the use of social media and its affect on the people.
Ultimately, we will put it into perspective by comparing all we know about Brexit, to the rise of anti-immigration and right-wing politics in the US and across Europe in the last 10 years or so.

During this course, we will also focus on methodology - how to analyze speeches (Toulmins model of argumentation, the rhetorical pentagram) and analyze framing in editiorial articles. Also grammar, with particular focus on Verbs.

Titel 7 Forløb#7 - Evil

Is it possible for people to be born evil? Is there such a thing as evil people or just evil actions? Evil as a concept has always been something that has fascinated humankind through the ages. In this course, we will look at fiction and non-fiction, as well as media, through the lens of 4 categories of Evil: Demonized, Instrumental, Ideological and Banal.

We will examine the concept of Evil and discuss and debate it's meaning and depiction, and push the boundaries of what we usually consider evil.


Besides the topic of Evil, we will also work with grammar and various methodologies. We have focused on Framing, Discourse analysis (Nodal points and equivilance chains) as well as AIDA and Shot-by-Shot analysis.

This course explores the American outdoor clothing company Patagonia as a case study in corporate responsibility, sustainability, and brand activism.

The course will focus on how companies use communication, branding, and argumentation to promote their identity and influence public opinion. Students will work with both written and visual material, including campaigns, advertisements, and company statements, applying analytical tools such as rhetorical analysis, framing, and Toulmin’s model of argumentation.

A central element of the course is the exploration of American values such as individualism, freedom, entrepreneurship, and activism. Students will use these values as a lens to analyse Patagonia and discuss how American culture is reflected in the company’s identity and communication.
