Within this list of topics, two aspects will be stressed throughout:
1. Politics and the distribution of power
2. Cultural encounters
History skills to be taught:
a. to recognize significant events as opposed to insignificant ones
b. to formulate relevant questions
c. to structure/organize historical information
d. to distinguish fact from opinion
e. to draw inferences from sources
f. to analyze sources applying the following concepts: origin, purpose, limitations, value
g. to read maps
h. to read basic statistical sources
i. to use primary and secondary sources in written assignments
Exam/Evaluation:
- By the end of Pre-IB the students are to write a mini-Historical Investigation on the basis of a research question formulated by the teachers/supervisors based on material (partly) covered in class. Working in groups of 3-4 the students are given a three-day writing period.
- Evaluation will be conducted in the form of group viva voce style interviews on the basis of the mini-Historical Investigations with supervisors, including a mandatory evaluation session about format etc.
- Assessment objectives:
a. understanding the EE criteria – focus on presentation rather than content
b. understanding the ideas of the academic method and of academic honesty
