Titel 1 Man and Nature (EKSAMEN)

About the topic:
This topic focuses on man's relationship with nature as expressed in various literary periods. It specifically deals with the differences between attitudes to nature and life in the city. We have built a vocabulary for speaking about similarities and differences/contrasts between nature and city life. Key concepts include Romanticism vs. more modern texts. The students researched Romanticism and created mindmaps.
In Hoffer and McCandless we see how the romanticised, idealised view of nature as therapeutic and soothing becomes subverted, since nature is instead presented as being ruthless.

Texts studied in class:
from the book "Wider Contexts" (Gyldendal, 2012), (ed. by Hanne Ohland-Andersen and others) :
William Blake, "The Ecchoing green" (1789), poem
William Wordsworth, The Tables Turned (1798), poem
Jon Krakauer, "Into the Wild" (1996), extract from non-fiction book (a letter from Alex to Ron Franz)
Eric Hoffer, "Nature and the City" (1968), essay
George Monbiot and Ron Charles: "Appetizers for The Road" reviews.

Cormac McCarthy: "The Road" (2006), excerpt of the opening of the novel.

In the book "Boomerang - Australia: Race, Identity, Nature and Horse Thieves" (Forlaget Columbus, 2023), (ed. by Kaalund & Clausen), we read:
Robyn Davidson, "Tracks" (1980), extract from a non-fiction travel book/memoir

"Into the Wild" (2007), film directed by Sean Penn

Titel 3 Death of a Salesman & the American Dream (EKSAMEN)

About the topic:
(værklæsning)

The focus of this topic is studying Arthur Miller's classic drama "Death of a Salesman" from 1949. One of the most prominent themes in the play is the 'American Dream' and the struggles and sacrifices involved in attempting to achieve it. It is therefore a continuation of our previous topic about American Values (desuden bygger det videre på den viden eleverne har om USA fra deres tidligere to-årige forløb i engelsk).
We also discussed the significance of family relations (specifically, dysfunctional family pattterns), father-son relationships (the lack of understanding between Willy and his eldest son Biff), and gender roles (Linda as the ever-supportive, but subdued wife).

A brief summary of the play:
Source: https://www.britannica.com/topic/Death-of-a-Salesman:

Death of a Salesman, a play in “two acts and a requiem” by Arthur Miller, written in 1948 and produced in 1949. Miller won a Pulitzer Prize for the work, which he described as “the tragedy of a man who gave his life, or sold it” in pursuit of the American Dream.
After many years on the road as a traveling salesman, Willy Loman realizes he has been a failure as a father and a husband. His sons, Happy and Biff, are not successful—on his terms (being “well liked”) or any others. His career fading, Willy escapes into dreamy reminiscences of an idealized past. In the play’s climactic scene, Biff prepares to leave home, starts arguing with Willy, confesses that he has spent three months in jail, and mocks his father’s belief in “a smile and a shoeshine.” Willy, bitter and broken, his illusions shattered, commits suicide.

Technical terms concerning plays (fagbegreber):
We have focused on genre traits of plays that are different from other types of fiction that we are used to working with in English lessons (short stories and novels):
- the importance of plays as being PERFORMED rather than simply READ.
- stage directions and their importance to the reader.
- how the dialogue between characters carries most of the action, as there are few to no descriptions, like you would see in a novel or short story.
- the structure of a play and elements of a tragedy (going back to Aristotle)
- this includes 'the fatal flaw' and Willy Loman as a tragic hero

Skriftligt fokus:

Titel 4 LOVE & Shakespeare (EKSAMEN)

In this topic, we have investigated love as a theme in various literary periods. Our focus has been on reading some of Shakespeare's sonnets, as well as excerpts from "Romeo and Juliet". We have studied the traits of the sonnet (form and structure, including iambic pentametre and rhyme scheme). We have worked with typical Shakespearean linguistic traits such as his use of pronouns (thou, thee, thy, thine), etc.
We have discussed different kinds of love, such as the constraints of marriage (The story of an Hour) and infatuation (Romeo & Juliet).

Material (kernestof): the chapter "Love" in Wider Contexts:

"Happy Endings" (1983), Margaret Atwood, short story (metafiction as a postmodern trait)
"The Story of an Hour" (1894), Kate Chopin, short story (modernism)
Sonnets 18 and 116 (1609), William Shakespeare, poems (Elizabethan era)
Excerpt from "Romeo & Juliet" (1597), William Shakespeare, drama: The so-called "Balcony Scene" from Act 2, scene 1 (Elizabethan era)

Supplerende stof:
Sonnet 29 by William Shakespeare (some students analysed this one, that is why it is added as extra material, not core material)
"Ink", a short story by Olivia Douglass (some students analysed this text in a written assignment).

Arbejdsformer/fokus:
- Eleverne har trænet mundtlighed ved selvstændigt at udarbejde sonnet-analyser i par (mundtlig aflevering). Herunder sonnettens træk og opbygning.
- Yderligere arbejde med style of writing som analysepunkt i essays.

Titel 5 Australia - one and free? (EKSAMEN)

About the topic:
This topic about Australia focuses specifically on the relationship between non-indigenous and indigenous Australians (Aborigines) from a post-colonial perspective, and the attempt in recent decades to show acknowledgement of indigenous peoples. This includes officially admitting to past mistakes in the treatment of Aborigines, and working towards reconciliation.

Historical events that we have researched:
- The Stolen Generations and motives behind the removal policy
- The "Bringing them home report"
- The "Sorry Book" campaign
- Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's official apology from 2008 (note! We have not studied the speech in class, but only mentioned it).

We briefly touched upon the "Voice to Parliament" referendum (= folkeafstemning) held on October 14th 2023. The purpose was to change the constitution to include a body (= en instans/forsamling) representing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People. The result was 40% FOR, 60% AGAINST.

Texts we have studied (kernestof):
"Advance Australia Fair" (song (the national anthem), Peter Dodds McCormick, 1878)
"The Redfern Speech" (speech, Paul Keating, 1992). Paul Keating was the Prime Minister of Australia from 1991 to 1996)
"The Stolen Generation" (article, TIME Magazine, October 2, 2000)
"Took the Children Away" (song, Archie Roach, 1990)

"How the arrival of Europeans from 1788 impacted Aboriginal peoples" from the website https://australianstogether.org.au/
