• Arbejde med grundlæggende tekstanalyse- og fortolkningsbegreber inden for fiktion og sagprosa (where, when, who, what)
• Arbejde med evnen til at skelne mellem væsentligt og uvæsentligt
• Ordforrådsarbejde som fast del af tekstarbejdet

Titel 2 The American Dream and Rhetorics, EKSAMEN

In this course we dive into the foundation of America - starting with the Pilgrims and immigrants coming to the US from Europe mainly. We look at the American Dream they had with them.
When we have the background in place we begin to look at the American Dream today - that is how it's a fundamental value to all Americans and whether or not the American Dream is actually possible for all.
We add rhetorics to the mix by looking at speeches on the topic to see how they define the American Dream.

Methods for analysis: non-fiction and rhetorical analysis. During the course we watch the film "The Pursuit of Happyness" - so you are also introduced to film analysis in English.

Titel 3 Fantasy - a Literary Genre

This course focusses on the literary genre "Fantasy". We read about the genre - which characteristic traits it has in terms of setting, characters etc.
We read different fantasy stories/films and use our knowledge to analyse them.
We also focus on why Fantasy appeals to wide audience and why it's relevant to a modern world.

Methods for analysis: fiction analysis, fantasy genre framework analysis and film analysis

Titel 4 The Odd One Out + postmodern Lit. Værk1, EKSAMEN

The topic is called "The odd one out" because we meet people in this topic who don't fit in in their environment. We also encounter stories which are challenging in terms of fx. structure - as the literature in this topic is postmodern (stylistically and in terms of content).

We read the novel "Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine" by Gail Honeymann as our "work no. 1" (værklæsning) - meanwhile we watch the tv-series "Normal People" based on a novel by Sally Rooney and read a couple of short stories and background information about postmodern Literature.

Titel 5 Inequality in the UK (and SRO), EKSAMEN

This course focusses on inequality in modern UK - we research how the traditional class system is now changing but that not eliminating inequality between groups of people. We examine primarily how inequality is seen in economically and in the educational system. Furthermore we examine why the tragic fire of Grenfell Tower became the symbol of the inequality in London (and the rest of the UK).
Along with Social Studies we examine which factors are behind inequality and which factors can affect inequality (SRO).

In this course we dive into the relatively new genre "True Crime" which is a subgenre of crime fiction.
Why are readers/listeners fascinated by true crime and is this fascination even good for them? how does true crime navigate the blurred lines of fiction and non-fiction?

Titel 7 Lingua Franca og studietur

In this course we focus on the history of the English language and how it came to being a global language spoken by millions of non-native speakers. During this course we go on a study trip to Vienna in Austria where You will conduct interviews with locals about their use of English as a lingua franca and we visit the museum for Esperanto - an attempt at language which would be completey neutral - cleared of any historical, cultural, societal, financial and political limitations.

Titel 8 New Zealand - traditional, new & complex, EKSAMEN

In this course we look at New Zealand as a relatively new country historically speaking - based in Maori (originally Polynesian) people as the first settlers. They still have strong cultural traditions but at the same time they face struggles as indegenous people. New Zealnd is also a modern multicultural society with many Asian people from a wave of immigration - as well as large Pakeha (White) population.
We look at culture, identity, history, inequality and multiculturalism during this course through Pakeha and Maori voices.

We also focus on the English language and how it is used as a lingua franca.

Titel 10 Minimalism: when less is more + værk2, EKSAMEN

In this course on minimalism we dive into the Iceberg Theory and Hemingway and read about the specific literary traits of the period in literary history. Furthermore we read a collection of short stories by Raymond Carver - "Short Cuts" (værklæsning 2).
A long the way we reflect on the difference between minimalism and more traditional descriptive writing (and "maximalism") - and what benefits/challenges they offer the reader.

Titel 11 Love; Shakespeare-contempary literature, EKSAMEN

In this course we examine how love and relationship/marriage is portrayed in different (selected) periods of literature - we research how the gender roles have changed over time - from Shakespeare (fx. Shakespeare in Love and sonnets) and the Renaissance - to Jane Austen - to today's society (Taylor Swift intertextuality)
While we dive into different periods we look at society and history at the time and relate the texts to their contemporary society.
In this course we texts from UK as well as US.

(We will relate this briefly to our course on Hemingway as well).

Titel 12 The History of Protest in Scotland

We spend a day (2 lesson) on the theme of Scotland's history of political protest and activites - we watch the documentary "Everybody to Kenmure Street" (+ expert talk) in the cinema in the morning and return to this in class in the evening

Ungdox' egne ord om arrangementet:
Dokumentarfilmfestivalen CPH:DOX's undervisningsprogram UNG:DOX inviterer onsdag d. 11/3 lærere og elever i engelsk til et arrangement, der dykker ned i Skotlands og Glasgows historie for protestbevægelser og aktioner, med visningen af dokumentaren ‘Everybody To Kenmure Street’, og et efterfølgende ekspertoplæg.

Om filmen: I maj 2021 udløser en razzia fra det britiske indenrigsministerium en af de mest spontant opståede og succesrige civile modstandsaktioner i nyere tid. I Skotlands mest mangfoldige kvarter strømmer beboere ud på gaden for at forhindre deportationen af deres naboer. Denne morgen i Glasgow, den første dag af Eid, midt under Corona, begyndte som alle andre. Men da naboerne via lokale meddelelsesnetværk hører, at to lokale mænd er blevet anholdt med henblik på udvisning, forlader hundredvis af mennesker deres morgenborde, Zoom-møder og dagligdag for at skynde sig ned til Kenmure Street i solidaritet med deres naboer. Selvom de fleste ikke kendte hinanden og der ingen planlægning var gået forud, organiserede denne ekstremt mangfoldige gruppe sig og påtog sig forskellige afgørende roller for at gøre det muligt at nå sit mål om løsladelsen af deres naboer. Dokumentaren fletter denne fascinerende historie sammen med fortællingen om Glasgows særlige tradition for protestbevægelser imod staten, og reflekterer over hvor den kultur stammer fra. 'Everybody To Kenmure Street' er et yderst interessant indblik i, hvad der driver denne civile modstand, hvilke forskellige solidaritetskampe der er blevet kæmpet i Skotland og Glasgow frem mod denne case fra 2021, og den rolle Skotlands eget koloniale forhold til England spiller i dette.

Oplæg: Historie-formidler og podcast vært, Katrine Nyland Sørensen, vil i forlængelse af visningen sætte os ind i Skotlands og Glasgows lange tradition for protestbevægelser, hvordan det hænger sammen med arbejderbevægelsen og hvorfor det adskiller sig fra protestkulturen og -historien i Danmark.
