American Politics: A Corrupt Politcal System(Exam)
1. American Politics: A Corrupt Political System - Eksamensemne 1
In this unit, “American Politics: A Corrupt Political System”, there will be a special focus on “the average American” and the parts of the American political system which do no longer work for the “average American”. We will explore the sentiment shared by many Americans that the political system is broken by the influence of money in politics. These corporate donations to politicians, while technically legal, are widely seen by American workers as a corrupting influence on the political system. Through this lens, we will be looking closely at the political topics on the forefront of the minds of the average American worker: Healthcare, Abortion Rights, Money in Politics and Gun Control.
At the end of the unit, you will be able to:
- give an overview of the ways in which the political system has failed “the average American”. How has the economic life of the average American changed over the last 50 years?
- analyze a number of different sources: protest-songs, articles, speeches, short stories/excerpts from novels, documentaries.
- define what “political corruption” is.

Roots:Identity and Culture in the Caribbean (Exam)
2. Roots: Culture and Identity in the Caribbean - Eksamensemne 2
In this unit, there will be a special focus on the forming of cultural identity in a post-colonial setting such as the Caribbean. Millions of slaves were taken from Western Africa through the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade and were forced to work on the sugar plantations fueling the British Empire. In this context, we look at the aspects that go into the forming of an identity – language, history, a sense of self – while looking at the histories and lived experiences of the slaves and freed peoples of the Caribbean.
A special focus will be on the role of English as a Lingua Franca – As in the poem Mr. Oxford Don, the Lingua Franca of English is used by the poet as an expression of lingual protest.
At the end of the unit, you will be able to:
- give an overview of the history of the Caribbean, including an overview of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade.
- analyze a number of different sources: poems, articles, speeches, short stories/excerpts from novels, documentaries.
- define the term “Roots” in relation to the process of forming one’s identity.

Fantasy - High and Low
In this module, each student will be assigned a specific work of fantasy to read and analyze during the course. Since we will have so many different books in progress at once, we will focus less on the individual story lines and focus more on the narrative techniques and branching choices within each fantasy book. Through this course, we will study the components that go into the making of a successful fantasy story, as well as the snags and the hurdles. Each fantasy book will be put into categories of either “High Fantasy” or “Low Fantasy”, and we will discuss the pros and cons of each approach to fantasy.

Pseudoscience and Disinformation (Exam)
In this unit, there will be a special focus on what constitutes peer-reviewed science, and what does not. An increasing wave of pseudoscience and belief in “alternative sciences”, such as homeopathy, Creationism and even astrology, have muddled the waters of what is deemed to be scientifically correct. Science literacy has gone down in many countries, which leaves open the door for fearmongering about the apparent dangers of vaccines and the rise of conspiracy theories. We will be studying the Intelligent Design Movement that is advocating for Equal Time in biology classrooms in the states. Additionally, we will be studying the pseudoscience of Dianetics, which is primarily used by the “Church” of Scientology. I have also arranged for us to pay a visit to the Scientology Church in Copenhagen, where we can get some answers to our questions on the mechanics of Dianetics.
At the end of the unit, you will be able to:
- give an overview of the defining features of science, as opposed to pseudoscience.
- analyze a number of different sources: poems, articles, short stories/excerpts from novels, documentaries.
- Define peer-reviewed science versus pseudoscience.

Atrocities of Man (Exam)
In this course, we will be studying three rather uncomfortable incidents of human history; The genocide of Native American people at the hands of European settlers, the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, and lastly, The incident known as the Rape of Nanking - the massacre and horrific treatment of civilians in the siege of the city of Nanking, China in 1937 by the hands of Japanese soldiers. These texts are by no means pleasant to read, and yet, it is important that these annals of man’s darkest hours be not erased because of our sensibilities. In this course, we take a hard look at human cruelty and try not to avert our eyes.
At the end of the unit, you will be able to:
- give an overview of the historical context of the three historical incidents;
Native American Genocide (1492-1850), The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (August, 1945) and the massacre known as The Rape of Nanking ( 1937).
A part of this overview will focus on the cruelty of mankind, and how people are able and, in some cases, conditioned to carry out such atrocities.
- analyze a number of different sources: poems, articles, short stories/excerpts from novels, documentaries.
- Define what constitutes a genocide.

Værklæsning - Frankenstein
In this course, you will be reading and analysing Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein; or, the Modern Prometheus. You will gain insight into the genres of horror and the gothic novel. A main focus of our reading will be the relationship between Victor Frankenstein and his creation, as well as the differences between the source material and the modern representations/adaptations of the Frankenstein story.
The form of the classes for this course will be largely controlled by you students, as each group of students will be responsible for preparing how we read and work with the text in each class. Make sure to find ways to help your fellow students in analysing the text.
