Titel 1 Graphic novels and superheroes

General purpose of the topic: the pupils have read a selection of comics (graphic novels) depicting the American superhero. The pupils will be introduced to analysing comics by applying graphic devices for analysis and interpretation. The role of the American superhero in American society and American identity will be discussed.

Academic learning objectives: how to read a graphic novel, how to analyse characters, the setting, the composition, and graphic devices applied in graphic novels.

General purpose of the topic: Is to introduce the students to the history of the English language and give them examples of the many varieties of the English language both in the UK and abroad.

Academic learning objectives: How to read non-fiction texts and analyze the characteristics of different dialects and sociolects of the English language. Also exercises in making oral presentations.

General purpose of the topic: Introducing the students to Afro American culture in  contemporary USA. By analyzing the film ”Moonlight” (Jenkins 2016), the students are introduced to a range of themes such as social inequality, racial discrimination, sexual discrimination, growing up. Also, the students are introduced to tools how to analyse film.  Finally, the theme The American Dream are discussed in relation to the film.

Macbeth
The unit focuses on the Renaissance and especially on Shakespeare and his play Macbeth.

At the end of the unit you will be able to discuss the Elizabethan Era, its world picture and not least its theatre. You will know the historical and cultural context. You can place Shakespeare in this context.

- You will be able to analyse and discuss Shakeaspeare's play Macbeth.
- You will be familiar with Shakespeare's style and language.
- You can explain the genre tragedy.
- You will know the iambic pentameter and the blank verse and different types of sonnets.

Materials:
Excerpts from Shakespeare's play Macbeth + background (in: Reading Shakespeare in Our Time, Birgitte Speyer, Columbus, 2017):
Act I, sc i, sc ii, sc vii, Act II, sc. i, sc ii ,Act V, sc. v.
Special attention is placed on the themes of unchecked ambition, regicide, masculine vs. feminine, appearences/nothing is what it seems as reflected in the play.
Background on history, Elizabethan theatre, tragedy and dramatic terms (in: 'Romeo and Juliet', Clausen and Kaalund (Gyldendal, 2017)).
Sonnets 18 and 130

Film:
Shakespeare in Love (film, John Madden,1998). Special attention to Shakespeare's London and its theatres as portrayed in the film as well as special attention to the elements of comedy and of tragedy in the film.
