Voices of South Africa
A teaching unit that revolves around the memoir ”Born a Crime”by Trevor Noah, published in 2017. We will reflect on the way in which the book sheds light on consequences of British colonialism in postcolonial South Africa. Highlighting themes such as cultural identity, when cultures clash and/or intermingle. Furthermore, we will discuss the strenghts and drawbacks of using different genres to thematize the complex issue of apartheid and its aftermath.

Overall aim of the unit:
Understanding depictions of the American superhero and American identity
Content of the unit:
In the lessons in this unit, the pupils will read a selection of comics (graphic novels) depicting the American superhero. The pupils will be introduced to analysing comics by applying graphic devices for analysis and interpretation. The pupils will also continue to apply the New Criticism model for literary analysis and interpretation in the unit.
The role of the American superhero in American society and American identity will be discussed. The pupils will enhance their skills in analysing characters, the setting, the composition, and graphic devices applied in graphic novels.

The pupils will gain an understanding of Ireland, its people and literary heritage.
Content of the unit:
The lessons in this unit will present the pupils for a variety of texts from Irish literature in which analytical and interpretation skills will be enhanced. The pupils will gain an understanding of the role of nature and religion in Ireland as well as the troubled relationship between Ireland and Britain, notably England in particular. The pupils will learn about key events of Irish history such as the Easter Rising, the Irish Civil War, and the Magdalen Laundries. A lesson in the unit will also be looking at Irish slang and Irish stereotypes. Finally, contemporary issues relating to Irish society will be discussed.

Political discourse in the US and the UK
Overall aim of the unit:
The pupils will read contemporary political speeches from the USA and Britain and gain knowledge of the art of writing a political speech.
Content of the unit:
In the lessons in this unit, the pupils will read political speeches from both the USA and Britain. These speeches will be analysed by applying two forms of a discourse analysis. The methods applied are Norman Fairclough’s and Laclau and Mouffes’ approaches to discourse analysis. These methods to discourse analysis will be supported by subsequent analyses of the use of rhetorical devices applied in the selected speeches of the unit.

The pupils will read Shakespeare’s Macbeth and consider the individual and social consequences of ambition.
Content of the unit:
In the lessons in this unit, the pupils will read a selection of scenes from Shakespeare’s Macbeth. The reading will focus on the characters, the setting, language, composition, and the time in which Shakespeare wrote his plays. The pupils will also gain background knowledge of the Elizabethan literary period. The overall theme of the analysis and interpretation of the play will be the consequences of ambition. The pupils will consider what the play teaches us about having personal ambition and what individual and social consequences having ambition can have for human beings.

Overall aim of the unit:
The pupils will gain an understanding of the main differences between British and American English as well as regional dialects of the English language.
Content of the unit:
The lessons in this unit will present the pupils for a variety of English dialects spoken in Britain and the USA. The pupils will learn about the origin of the English language and its development into becoming a global language spoken by people around the world as either a native or foreign language. In groups, the pupils will select a variety of the English language and present an analysis of the dialect in comparison to either British English (RP) or standard American English based upon differences in vocabulary, pronunciation, syntax and grammar.

Content of the unit:
The lessons in this unit will present the pupils for a selection of the Romantic, Victorian, Modernist and Post-Modernist literary periods. The pupils will read texts presenting key historical and social events of the periods as well as literary traits related to the period. The aim of this unit is to present knowledge of literary periods which the pupils can apply in their continued analysis and interpretation of literary texts.

Post-modern identities
Overall aim of the unit:
Exploring the post-modern individual through analysis and interpretation of contemporary British post-modern short stories.
Content of the unit:
In the lessons in this unit, the pupils will be introduced to a selection of British post-modernist literature. All short stories are set in a big city setting, and the pupils will analyse the role of the setting on the postmodern individual as it is depicted in the short stories. The pupils will gain an understanding of postmodernism as a literary theory by looking at central genre characteristics of the literary period. The pupils will also continue to apply the New Criticism model for literary analysis and interpretation in the unit. The role of characters, setting, symbolism and open-ended interpretation is exploxed in this unit. The pupils will also watch a BBC documentary on Britain in the 80s to gain valuable background knowledge of the time in which many of the post-modern stories have been written in.

Romanticism - Social criticism
Overall aim of the unit:
How society and social change were drivers of inspiration for the poets of the Romantic age.
Content of the unit:
In the lessons in this unit, the pupils will be introduced to a selection of poems from the Romantic age. The BBC documentary The Romantics will function as a foundation for poetry analysis, as various poets of the Romantic age positioned themselves against the changes in society seen at the time. The role of nature and the symbolic value of children will be key aspects in the analysis of the poems presented in the unit. Poems by Blake, Wordsworth, and Coleridge will be analysed in the lessons of the unit.
