The British - relating to the others (exam)
The theme is linked to 2.c’s study trip to Naples, Italy, where the focus is The Grand Tour in the 18th and 19th century. Why did British people travel to Italy? What was the purpose? How did they encounter the foreign, and how were they met by the Italians?
We will compare and discuss the original 18th and 19th century Grand Tour with today’s Grand Tour. The cultural meeting is mirrored in language where Danes communicate with Italians in English (English as lingua franca).
We will broaden out the perspective to an overview of the British Empire's impact on the British self image and view on "the other" seen through both fictional and non-fictional texts, poems, the national anthem and film excerpts.
